I am the owner of a 1994 Q45a and I have a failed power steering pump. According to my mechanic, there are no replacement pumps available in the entire country. Any suggestions? How do I go about finding the appropriate pump or having this one rebuilt?

Thanks,

David

remind your 'mechanic' that the ps pump is a combined ps and active system pump (two subsystems powered by a single input shaft). last i checked (about 4 years ago), a new active pump could be had from IoS for about $420. if the ps is pump is not producing pressiure, but the active is fine, try replacing all the o-rings in the pump. there is a large one for the ps that when exposed to air will shrink enough to allow fluid bypass instead of building pressure.

Dear Jay,

I am aware of the duality of the pump. Thank you. I am unaware of the source you quoted "IoS". Can you tell me how or where I can contact them? Right now I am looking at having my old one rebuilt but I am unsure how that will work out.

Thanks again for your information. I have had my Q45 for a long time and I hate losing it.

:welcome: to NICO David!

IOS is Infiniti of Scottsdale - which is the brick-and-mortar home of http://www.infinitipartsusa.com that was linked in the first reply to your post. If they aren't available new from Nissan anymore, you could always checked for a used replacement at http://www.car-part.com if the rebuilding doesn't work out. P/S pump failures are fairly rare, so you have a good chance of getting a working used one.

Is your active system still functioning? If so, it's nice to see another non-converted active Q on the board! They are becoming a so rare...

Thank you!

I did a "search" in the database here for "IOS" and was finally able to figure out what it was...I never claimed to be the sharpest knife in the drawer, don't you know. In the meantime, my pump was sent to a company in NC for a rebuild. Nissan no longer carries any new (or rebuilt) pumps that will fit my Q45...according to my mechanic. I think he is sorry he signed on to the job but we have been good friends for 20 years so I am sure he will give it his best effort.

With regard to the suspension system, it is original but doesn't work very well (if at all). I really like the car and I "only" have about 176,000 miles on it but things are starting to deteriorate...much like its owner. Perhaps this site will give the information and support to restore it to its past ability.

Thanks again

If all goes well with your rebuild, please give us the contact information for the rebuilder. We'll probably see a few more of these issues over the years.

I am thinking this "mechanic" doesn't know shoeshine from shinola.

Pumps very seldom failed unless abused. Notice no comment about fluid's appearance nor condition.
