I've got a '90 Q45 (no traction control) with about 180k miles and it needs new valve cover gaskets.

I had this performed by the dealer once before (about 60k miles ago) and as I remember it was fairly expensive (labor).

You guys seem like experts when it comes to old Qs. Can you help me with the following:

* Is this a DIY item?* How long (hours) will it probably take?* What parts (part #s) do I need?* Is there someone who's done it before who could walk me through it beforehand?

Don't want to mess anything up but I don't want to spend anymore that I have to.

Thx.

Ive done it before on my 94Q and let me tell you what, have fun on the 90!!

Its not really that bad, its more hard because theres a bunch of crap in the way.. This is a great time to replace the plugs as well...

Basically you gotta do all the labor to remove the plugs, and then pull the covers..... For you, you will need to learn the art of RTV.. Theres not actually a gasket, and you gotta use liquid gasket. :(

Its not bad, very straight foreward.....

We charge $500 [7 billable hours] the best guys can do an adequate job in 5 hours if they have all the speciality tools, shop air, solvent tanks, and a decent young back or a supply of OxyC to recover.

I usually assume a layman can do it in a day [9-10-12 hours].

The trick is to let the RTV cure for 24 hours before cranking again.
