As most of us know, used parts are a huge money saver for Q45s, especially G50s since so many are trashed from guides or just negligence. Most of the time, since hte Qs are so well built that the used parts you find in junkyards are almost always good, however people cna get over confident and buy used parts that should be avoided.

So, I thought id compile a list... I think we should divide them into 3 categories. of course, this assumes that the part is in good condition and is free of obvious defects. This assumes that you inspect the part prior to purchase. in my list, i am going to omit the parts that dont usually see failures on Qs.

Please post up if you have any additions.....

Criteria:Safe- Nearly all the time you get one of these parts its good. Lets say 90/10 good vs bad

Iffy- Sometimes good, sometimes not, around 50/50

Avoid- Just like you would AIDS..

Safe

1. injectors- Note that on any given Q in the junkyard you can harvest at least 3-4 good injectors. Bring your VOM.2. LCU's on 94-96's3. Body parts4. ECU's or most all other electronic components.

Iffy1. Transmissions2. Fuel pump controllers3. Bose Amps/speakers

AVOID1. Knock sensors2. Fuel pumps

I would put Bose amps and speakers under avoid. After being exposed to outdoor humidity and heat, they're toast. The exception is if you get an armful of them for free like I have on occasion. Some junkyards look down on them to the point where you're free to take as many as you'd like, test them out, and throw the rest away.

Even the ones that are somewhat okay are already near death.

Avoid- brake pads, oil/air/fuel filters, fan belts, Oxygen sensors, radiator caps, oil pressure sending units, engine/transmission seals, coolant hoses, vacuum hoses, head gaskets, door lock timer control units, early G50 glove box hinges, etc.....

Injectors are a wear item. Without knowing how they were maintained, even if they ohm test correctly, the screens could be trashed. I guess it's all about how long you expect them to perform and to which specification.

With all the parts I've sold, I've never received a single bad comment. I've sold many FPCUs for example with nary a complaint so I'd put them on the reliable list. Buyers should make sure the seller is inspecting them for any burnt components. Nothing wrong with belts and brake pads if good quality and new condition. I have a set of rear pads on my Q right now from a junker. (Dont flame me).... For sure, I would not buy/sell an HVAC control unit without testing it first.

IffyAC blower resistorIn retrospect, Bose amps are fine under Iffy.

I think coil packs and ignitors are safe for G50, iffy for Y33.

ANY motors life is used up as it operates, replacing the blower motor with one with high miles is sure to be a short lived exercise! SAME with any motor

A few random thoughts on used parts...

Avoid heater cores from Alaska or Minnesota...

Avoid AC compressors from Florida, Arizona or even parts of Cali, TX

The worst maintained Q's will have the best hood struts!....

We all know a few... "Hey, pop your hood!".... "Huh? I can't find the thingy".... "Umm, that's the parking brake!"... "You know what, never mind, the smoke will go away when you drive!"
