Ive heard a lot of people talking about this, and its been fairly common from what I hear since a lot of Q owners are still on original trans....

My Level 10 still shifts perfect, so its not on my car, but I don't have a decent response to people who ask me about this...

The symptom is that when its cold it will delay shifting into drive, however if you shift it manually into 3rd it will go fine. Once warm, its fine.... Otherwise the trans shifts fine... It will shift fine into reverse....

What would cause this?? My old Q did this a little, and it was shifting great up until the day it died.... I dont see how shifting into 3rd would fix this, because its still shifting right into 1st regardless of what position the shifter is in...

Shouldn't this be in IOM?

All cold transmission operating anomalies are really meaningless.

Operating temperature really does mean something.

Anomalies after operating temperatures are reached are invaribaly due to maintenance insufficiencies. The original Q45tech high maintenance regime is the platinum standard for transmission longevity.

Once the decay of the transmission internals progresses beyond a certain stage, nothing can be done to mend it, only slow the rate of wear if it is not close to or beyond terminal.

Just like most human medicines are a mild poisons for some other aspect, most additives [those that actually do anything positive or negative] always have downsides.

When abuse has reached the limit, transplantation is in order.

I always wonder when people buy a used car why they don't budget for a transmission replacement instead of waiting and acting shocked and blaming someone, everyone but themselves for buying the vehicle.

Across the range 90-96 there are few trannies that last much beyond 150,000 miles. [Longevity is a function of traffic jam miles vs interstate miles..............number of shift cycles per mile.

When the internal pressures are lower [due to pump and seal wear] the shifts take longer and longer and longer until the END.

my 94Q, 84K, stock trans shifts firm from 1-2, and lazy and soft 2-3rd. After that I don't notice any strange things... seems fine... Downshifting seems OK. Do I have a problem w/ the 2-3 shift?

Thanks...

Where can one see this "The original Q45tech high maintenance regime"?

Hesitation and stalling can be caused by overfilling.

That's a common observation, at least on Y33's - There was a thread about it several months ago, the gist of which was that it's normal. IIRC, there are more things happening during the 2-3 upshift, which is why it's more sluggish than the 1-2 upshift on a cold transmission.

The short answer: "Yeah, they'll do that!"

This sounds very much like what has happened to the Level 10 in "Da Beast". After talking with Pat at Level 10, he believes it's the sprag gear. This is the gear at the rear of the transmission where the return line from the heat exchanger flow ATF back into the transmission. If this fluid is hot, you have low fluid or temporarily lose fluid/pressure chances are pretty good your transmission is going to go bad. Maybe not right away, but eventually .

Once I get a replcement transmission installed, I'm going to send this one back to Level 10 for them for an estimate.
