i just read somewhere that the Z32 300zx transmissions(turbo i believe) will work in a Y33 Q45. is this true? it seems the Q trannies are astronomically expensive, while the 300 trannies are super cheap. any truth to this rumor? or does anyone know the transmission model number so i can cross reference them? thanks! (btw, i'm assuming the bellhousings will need to be swapped, i did just think of that.)

So what would be needed to swap a 5 speed into a Y33?

Adapter plate, location for clutch pedal and master cylinder and mounts.

Maybe a custom drive shaft?

He was referring to the auto trans, not the MT...

Its gonna take as much if not more work (new adapter plate for VH41, VH45 is already good) as it would to swap it into a G50... not sure if a Y33 trans is compatible in a G50 (ie if the bellhousings are the same).. Its kinda iffy, id say without knowing or looking in the FSM its 50/50.....

You might be able to modify a driveshaft (use front half of Z32 with the second half of a Q45) and have that work.. I know it works with the Z32s. When they do the MT swap, they can just buy the front half and bolt it to the rear half... afer replacing the carrier bearing, of course.

I think the gearing between the Z32 auto and the Y33 auto is different. I'd check both shop manuals before assuming anything.

As for the manual swap, I'm all over that too. I've yet to see one of these mythical adapter plates yet.

Yeah the gearing is different, but its maily just a different 1st and 2nd gear, closer to the 9093 Q... Theyre just a little different, not much better or worse... id say just swap in a Z32 TCU to be safe...

Robert, the adapter plates are out there, as you know...

ok so out of all this, i can assume that a Z32 transmission can be used in a Y33 chassis...assuming both transmissions are of the same build, you could potentially swap them right? maybe having to swap over oil pumps and bell housings....or am i just reading this totally wrong...?
