Oh come on, a 5 second search of this site will bring up more information regarding ATF and transmission care than almost any other topic discussed since the forums birth.

Nissan Matic "D" or Dexron II fluids. Dexron III is backward-compatible as are Nissan's Matic "J" and "K" fluids. Standard Dexron/Mercon ATF is just fine.

You can search the internet for text on JASO-1A performance standard -- then it is a matter of budget.

JASO-1A performance standard created was by Japanese Automobile Manufacturers. This standard is recognized by Japanese OEM's in certifying ATF for use in their vehicles.

M1 with 6 oz. of LubeGuard Red (not black!).

Mechanical exchange or drain and refill?

I'm gonna do a homebrew drain and refill along with a new filter and transmission cooler.

If you don't have a history on this transmission you should go to a shop that can flush the transmission completely out. If not, you'll only get about 50% of the current fluid.

Actually, you will be adding new fluid to the expired 60%+ remaining in the TC and gear set.

Still better than doing nothing.
