On occasion, when warm, the starter in my 1990 Q will continue to spin after the engine starts and the key has returned to the on position. It only lasts for 1-2 seconds. The car starts quickly at all times, hot or cold, whether this symptom shows up or not.

Perhaps its normal, and my problem is that the starter is noisier than mostl? Or a problem with the switch or relay? A tech where I took the car for alignment was the first to notice it.

Any advice appreciated.

Sounds like the solonid is not recoiling and keeping it engaged. You can probably pull it and clean it to see if it helps. I would not run it this way, as it will destroy the teeth on the fly wheel. If and when you put a new starter on, the chewed teeth of the fly wheel will keep the new starter from working properly and destroy the new starter. Old Z's were notorius for this . . . been there done that!
