Hi,

I'm trying to get to my timing guides & up to the removal of the main central pully. Before I just remove it, is there anything else I need to worry about? Does it need to be at TDC and how do I know when it is (I don't see any marks)? Does the 5MM allen wrench screw need to come out (what does that do)? Also, does anyone know the exact size of the bolt in the middle since I don't have a large enough socket.

Thanks for the help...

#1 TDC on the compression stroke is always good practice, at the very least. In case you jump time on one chain, you won't have to pull both rocker covers, just one of them. There are marks on the rear-most pulley flange, and a dowel in the timing cover, roughly in the 10:30 position. You also have to look at the crank-angle sensor notch, or you could possibly be at TDC on exhaust strokeWhat 5mm all wrench screw are you talking about...for the guide bolts? Those are 5mm allens, and you'll see them after the cover comes off.The crankshaft bolt is a 30mm head.

Good luck!

Thanks for the quick reply.

I'm still learning about the internal workings of the engine so I have a couple of follow-up questions. So if I align the pully flange & the Dowl on the cover it will be at TDC, right? How can I check using the CAS to see if it on the intake or exhaust stroke? Also, there's a 5MM allen wrench screw next to the 30MM bolt holding the pully.

Thanks for your help.

Don't remove the bolts right next to the crankshaft bolt. They only go into the pulley and are for balance. The camshafts turn 1/2 the speed of the crankshaft. Aligning the marks on the pulley gets you to TDC...but you won't know if it's TDC on the compression or the exhaust stroke without looking at the CAS. You have to pull the plastic cover off the CAS and look at the notch on the little metal wheel. I should point to the passenger side of the car. If it's pointing the other way, turn the crankshaft with a wrench and the 30mm socket 360 degrees, and the CAS will turn 180 degrees--#1 TDC on compression. Check the manual for the right pulley mark...there are several. I think it's the last one, but verify that.

Thanks for the help.

I'll hopefully be done tomorrow.
