I just had my steering rack replaced, $603 plus change. That included parts and alignment so I think I got a pretty good deal since some here have said it was more than a grand.

They had trouble getting the PS fluid into the system so they found the reservoir was clogged. At the bottom of the reservoir is a screen and a filter. They could not get it clean enough for the PS fluid to flow. They could not locate a replacement anywhere.

I don't know how they figured this out but they used a BMW/Mini Cooper reservoir that fit. I got the info on the part from the shop so I could post it here. It's Dorman part number 603-906. Should be easy to get from the number.

I hope this helps anyone in my situation.

My shop is great!

Good to know. As these cars get older and Nissan's stash-o-parts is depleted, we'll all be looking outside the box for solutions to issues like this.

I just had my power steering rack rebuilt. Dealer wanted $2300-2500, a local shop did it for ~$1050. Took it off, sent it for resealing, then put it back on. The leak is now fixed but the steering still makes a lot of noise on initial start and backing out of the garage. I was told that I'm now looking at replacing the power steering pump. OEM is $750 just for the part, but I'm starting to look for MUCH cheaper options. I don't plan to spend $2000 for fixing my steering on a car probably worth $4000 but want it to work.

Wow, even a thousand is still a lot of money.

I got my PS pump on eBay. 75 bucks iirc. Seems to work fine. Wish I could have said the same about the idiot that installed it.
