q45 installation kit, 1st gen?

has anybody used the Scosche NN1490 kit that crutchfield recommends? i'm looking at crutchfield's instructions, and the kit is shown, rather unclearly, and looks like it's for the old din, 2 big knobs on either side, radios. has anybody used this kit with a more recent head unit? is it a matter of cutting away the material that's in the way? or is there a better install kit out there? thanks.

that is the dual gang insert. there are provisions to cut it out. just do that and you will be good to go.
