Hello, I am from the g35driver.com forums. I have a friend with a 1998 Q45(around 140k miles) with a severe idling problem, whenever he is in idle the rpm would jump from 500-1.5k rpm and back down. The car would sometimes die as well after several jumps in rpm. We have already replaced oil, oil filter, transmission fluid, etc. (full tune up)

We called the dealership and they told us to replace the ECU for around $1500 on parts alone. I tried to search information about it but so far no luck. Does anyone know if that is the only problem, or any alternate ways to resolve this without spending a fortune.

Thanks in advance.

I woudl take the car to autozone and have them pull the codes.. its possible the ECU is bad, but i might try other things first.

Thanks, I will be taking the car to the dealership this friday to figure out what exactly is wrong with the car. If anyone have any other ideas in why the car is going crazy, please share.

why is the dealership charging $1500 for the ecu ? how much did you buy your ecu part for? and is it compatible with 1998 Q45t automatic.

A dirty or bad MAF certainly could cause that...

Could be a few things like the MAF, faulty Knock Sensors, fried ECU........ but the best thing to do is to see what codes are being thrown and then get back to us because the Dealer will certainly take all your money. $1500 for a new ECU, good grief!! It takes 15 minutes to change one out and some of us have extra ones and you can find them on e-bay as well.

Let us know what codes were thrown.

Have you cleaned the IAC and EGR valves? The intake path to the runners?

Run some ISO-HEET through it? BG44K?
