There has always been some disagreement among memebers of what the proper nomenclature for the Q45 generations is.

Many here (including Dennis and myself) have argued for years that the 94-96 are their own generation and therefore the division is as follows:

OPTION 1)

90-93 Gen 194-96 Gen 297-01 Gen 32k2+ Gen 4

Another popular school of thought based in part to the factory internal lumping together of the 90-93 and 94-96 as the "G50 series", takes this view:

OPTION 2)

90-96 Gen 197-01 Gen 22k2+ Gen 3

I also humbly suggest the following compromise:

OPTION 3)

90-93 Gen 1a94-96 Gen 1b97-01 Gen 22k2+ Gen 3

This has the advantage of properly addressing the marked differences between the 90/93 and 94/96, yet still recognizes their significant commonality in construction.

I like for all of us to be able to have a standard system of reference when we refer to these cars in order to minimize consusion.

Vote in my poll, after taking a moment to reflect please.

Fred...:)What should out Q45 Nomenclature be?

Fred,

I voted for the first option. I always considered a 94-96 a 2nd-gen Q for the following reasons:

1. Fred of all people knows that many of the parts between a 94-96 and a 90-93 are not interchangeable. This was why he parted out his totalled 91 Q.

2. The chain guide problem is basically non-existent in 94-96 whereas it is the 90-93 achilles heel.

3. Check out the engineering and infiniti online mechanic forums and you'll see Dennis's explanations about how difficult and the custom work required to put a 94+ engine in a 90-93 and vice versa.

Just my humble opinion.

Nick :)

I think it goes either way..... I think there is enough in common for them to be considered in the same generation, but then again there are enough differences (minute, mind you) that they could be considered different "Generations"......

I always just say 94-96, instead of saying 1st gen, 2nd gen, or whatever

I concur 100% with Nick.

There are VERY FEW body panels that are interchangeable.

The interior is VERY different.

There are significant enough engine differences to necessitate seeking out a 90-93 or a 94-95 (96 seperately) replacement engine...

Therefore, I vote option 1.

Incidentally, Infiniti Master Techs at Scottsdale reference them as such as well.

The first option is the most correct one, cause the "Generation" is equal to Platform in the automotive world, I believe. 90-96 are based on the same platform inspite some changes made from year to year.

If follow the logic proposed in Option 2 one would need to create a separate generation for 96 model cause it's very different from previous years as well.

I voted for option 3 though, cause it's just more convenient to refer by gen. number in the forum (i.e. 1a, 3 instead 90-93, 2002+), sort of NICO notation.

All things considered, I voted for option 3. The basic platform is the same yet mechanicals are somewhat but not completely different. The bodystyle is mostly the same and has the same lines.

Is that ambiguous enough for you? LOL.

I'd vote for option 3. Since car manufacturers and general public always classify auto generations by body style, calling 90-96 by 2 different generations would confuse newbies who don't know much about Q45's when they read the posts. We want more members, don't we? :)
