I'm looking to do a Q45 engine swap into my 300ZX (Z32) and was wondering if you guys could offer some advice:

1) What's the best engine to go for in terms of tuning potintial, the VE or the VK. Bear in mind I don't want to go forced induction.2) What sort of power figures have been achieved from each engine.3) Are the dimensions of the two engines similar.4) Are there any known issues with these engines (ie stuff I should replace before dropping it in?)

Thanks in advance

Welcome to NICO John!

1. The VK is newer, but the VH has been a proven engine.. You can also get a VH much cheaper (probably 1200-2000 TOPS for pristine) compared to close to 10,000 for a brand new ready to install VK... The VK puts out more power (or at least is rated such) for more poewr than the VH45....

2. I dont know what sort of mods could be done besides some sort of FI..... Theyre pretty mcuh as good as you get from the factory...

3. I think the VH is a little wider

4. on the early VH there is the issues with the timing guides.. And if you got a Jap takeout engine youd want to rehab it..

I have a VH45DE with a bad rod, probably wouldnt need a lot of rehabbing, and would be ideal if your looking to do interlam mods anyway... Ill cut you a smashing deal...

The VH45DE is really wide, so wide that i know it wouldn't fit a 240sx. I've measured but i don't recall exact figures. The 300zx TT engine will fit the 240sx bay but a VH45DE wont, if that helps. The VH41DE is narrower and should fit really well, good luck lining up a transmission that suits your needs. I'd suggest fabricating a rear mounted single turbo system and putting maybe 12psi down its throat for about 500-550hp. Don't try it on the stock A/T. A ton of work on a car that easily can get far more HP from a VG30DETT.

It will fit, as it's been done, so that's not a worry.I know it's a lot of work, but my whole point is I don't want forced induction, lag just annoys me.Was going to junk the stock injection and fit independant throttle bodies and aftermarket management. I'd figured 100bhp/l shouldn't be too hard to achieve ?I'm planning to use the Z32 manual transmission and make an adaptor plate to get it to fit. There's no way I'm putting an auto on it.Cheers for the answers anyway.Elwesso, I'll bear that in mind, but I'm in the UK, so shipping might cost a bit!

LOL,

Birmingham....like..Birmingham, not Birmingham Alabama.

Good luck with your project, any links to where you've seen it done before?
