I need to know the best way to go about removing the engine from the Q and replacing it with another. At this point I have everything dissconected but can't get the engine separated from the transmission. Should I pull the two together or will they separate?

Q45tech or Forecast should be able to detail the process. Welcome!

Lots easier to drop both as a unit then separate, that way you can work on the ground without super long extensions for the top transmission to engine bolts.........the exhaust and dshaft come out fast with 2 techs.

I am assuming that I will have to drop the corssmember that the steering rack sits in and ties the suspension together; is that correct?

That's correct. Disconnect the steering system first, making sure you first mark the orientation of the steering shaft spindle. Support the engine, remove the engine mount nuts, and remove the crossmember.

If you are changing the motor mounts can you support the engine and drop the crossmember with the mounts on it without disturbing the steering?

of course when you drop the cross member, the engine needs to held from above.

The front bumper needs to be about 36-40 inches off the floor.

Once the engine is hanging, get a tall jack under the transmission and lower the whole thing together, slide it forward and pull the transmission.

The engine mounts can be changed without disturbing the tie-rod lengths. Realigning the steering wheel to the rack is a little tricky, use white-out as you take it apart so that it can be easily lined up.

I have access to a hoist and those tall screw jacks. Can the engine and transmission be supported from the bottom with those jacks while removing the cross member. Does the steering rack have to come off with the cross member?

the steering rack is mounted the cross member. Detach one or both of the steering knucles at the wheel, and the high pressure hose connection from the pump and the whole thing comes out as a unit.

It's not a good idea to try and support the engine from underneath while dropping the craddle. You would be supporting a dynamic weight on the oil pan and could risk dropping the engine, denting the pan etc.

It may be possible to support everything with jacks under the transmission bell, but when trying to lower the engine, I would definately recomend against it.

Look for a tall hoist, tractor with a hydrulic bucket or an overhead pulley.

The transmission needs to be on a variable height jack (hydrulic) since it and the engine need to come down together. It's a tricky process to get it all free of the exhust lines and AC compressor (you don't need to drain the freon) and it needs to sort of sea-saw down.

I sure am glad Daedalus and Q45tech are giving you pointers on the taking out the engine. It sure wasn't fun standing underneath the car loosening the subframe and transmission mount with an almost 800lb engine/transmission package right about my head help up by a flimsy engine hoist....

Forecast is the MAN. Did you see his Q45 engine rebuild site?
