Does anyone know if Q45s all have limited slip differentials or not?How about by generation; G50, Y33, F50?

It makes a difference in what gear lube is used.

Sorry if this has been asked and answered before, but lubricants and their formulations change. What was good two years ago might have changed.

Mobil1 synthetic 75-140 gear lube is listed as an LS lube, for limited slip differentials, as is 75-90.Are these types preferred for my upcoming differential lube change in my 2005 Q45, and if so, which grade?

Thanks

All have VLSD. The silicone fluid is in a compartment separate from the differential lubrication.

In Phoenix, you definitely want to use a synthetic 75W-90.

Not the 2002 F50 Q45. I've opened 2 pumpkins, and have scanned the FSM many times. These Q45 have an R200 rear final drive compared to the VLSD equipped G35 R200V rear final drive

Really? That would be disappointing and cross the F50 off my list unless I added one. This is really too Lesux like!

Off to scan the F50 manual.

And info on the 2001 Q45

Quote »2001 Infiniti Q45 Performance Luxury Sedan Adds Genuine Wood Trim, Luxury Enhancements to All Models

In the last year of production for this second generation model, the 2001 Q45 receives a series of interior and exterior enhancements – many of which were introduced on the special 2000 Anniversary Edition. An all-new third generation Q45 will go on sale in March 2001 as a 2002 model.

For 2001, the Luxury Model returns (replacing the Anniversary Edition). Both the Luxury Model and Touring Model (Q45t) now offer body color door handles, genuine Bird’s Eye maple wood trim, a new wood (simulated) and leather steering wheel. The 2001 Touring Model also receives standard bright-finish 17-inch wheels.

Like last year, the 2001 Q45 also features a 100,000-mile tune-up interval, front seat active head restraints, one-touch auto-up/down front windows with safety reverse, one-touch auto-open/close sunroof with safety reverse and innovative, optional Birdview™ navigation system.

Exterior Design

The 2001 Q45 continues to stand out in the highly competitive luxury sedan segment. From the strong front grille to the inversely curved C-pillar, the elegant styling of the Q45 engages the senses and conveys a message of “luxury with performance.” Items ranging from its 17-inch bright aluminum alloy wheels to Xenon headlights let it be known that performance is of equal emphasis both outside and under the hood.

One of the Q45’s most powerful design features is its distinctive jewel-like headlights, which contain two round elements per side mounted within a rectangular clear-lens frame.

The headlights themselves are a high intensity discharge (HID) type with Xenon gas bulbs and crystalline lenses. In the rear, the integrated combination lamps are revised and the license plate finisher is body-colored to provide a more elegant look.

Other exterior features include a power glass sunroof with tilt/slide feature and sunshade. The sunroof also offers a “one-touch” auto-open/close with safety reverse feature for ease of operation. Combining style, convenience and safety, the Q45’s power remote-controlled mirrors are body-color, heated and have an anti-glare coating.

Interior Design

The 2001 Q45 continues the Infiniti tradition of combining a driver-oriented cockpit with a full array of premium luxury amenities.

Interior highlights include standard leather seats, a wood and leather steering wheel (simulated wood), one-touch auto-up/down windows with safety reverse, power-operated rear sunshade, retained accessory power for the sunroof and windows, height-adjustable rear outboard head restraints, steering wheel-mounted audio switches and genuine Bird’s Eye maple wood trim on the center console and the cabin “sweep.”

Other standard features include 8-way driver and front-passenger seats, driver’s entry/exit system with two-position memory, power windows, trunk and fuel filler door releases, new rear parcel shelf tether anchors, automatic temperature control with microfiltration ventilation and rear air conditioning/heater ducts, power door locks with selective unlocking, HomeLink® Universal Transceiver and dual cupholders front and rear.

The 2001 Q45 also offers a standard Bose® 200-watt, 8-speaker AM/FM/cassette and in-dash CD player with revised steering wheel audio controls (“next” instead of “seek”). Every Q45 is pre-wired for both an optional 6-disc CD autochanger and Infiniti cellular phones.

The 2001 Q45’s optional navigation system features an industry-exclusive three-dimensional Birdview map display with an easy-to-read rolling display of roads, buildings, and other points of interest. In addition to the mapping system, the navigation screen offers touch-screen automatic temperature controls.

Using a combination of global positioning sensors, gyroscopic sensors and mapping CDs, the system is regionally oriented, focusing on where the buyer lives. Nine total CDs, available at Infiniti dealers, enable the system to work anywhere in the U.S. Updated mapping CDs with the latest routes and points of interest will also be available as they are developed.

The navigation system works with the standard Bose audio system to lower radio volume when directions are spoken. The system is housed in the center of the dashboard with the mapping controls located on the left, while the temperature controls are located on the right. The Bose audio system is directly below the navigation system allowing the driver to easily control each component.

Engine/Suspension

The Q45 offers an advanced 4.1-liter 32-valve DOHC V8 as standard equipment. The engine provides responsive acceleration, smooth and quiet operation and low maintenance, yet still appeals to performance minded drivers as an exceptional higher speed tourer when the call of the open highway beckons. The 2001 Q45 delivers responsible fuel economy of 18 mpg City/23 mpg Highway.

The engine, rated at 266 horsepower and 278 ft-lbs of torque, is mated to an advanced electronically controlled 4-speed automatic transmission. Owners will enjoy the added efficiency and value of 100,000-mile tune-up intervals.

A viscous limited-slip differential is also standard on every Q45, along with Infiniti’s Traction Control System (TCS). TCS provides excellent all-condition driving performance, automatically engaging to enhance stability and control when any one of the wheels is slipping.

The Q45’s refined suspension utilizes front struts with coil springs designed to enhance handling and stability by minimizing camber change during cornering. The rear suspension is an independent multi-link design, using three links (instead of the typical two-link design) to provide maximum tire contact with the road and superior body roll control, even under extreme driving conditions.

The Active Damping Suspension, on Q45 Touring models, offers electronically modulated shock valving control with SPORT and AUTO driver selectable settings. With the two adjustable settings, drivers can choose between a softer, more comfortable ride or a firmer ride with more road feel, depending on driver preference. It also helps improve tire-to-road surface contact for greater stability and enhanced handling control, which helps eliminate excessive body movement, as experienced during hard cornering, braking or acceleration.

Braking is provided by standard 4-wheel power-assisted vented disc brakes with 3-channel/4-sensor Anti-lock Braking System (ABS). Vehicle speed-sensitive power rack-and-pinion steering is also standard. Luxury Models feature 16-inch aluminum alloy wheels with 215/60R16 V-rated tires. Touring Models offer 17-inch 5-spoke performance style bright aluminum alloy wheels with 225/50R17 tires.

Safety and Security

The 2001 Q45’s standard front-seat supplemental side-impact air bags deploy to provide coverage of both head and chest and new front seat active head restraints help prevent head and neck injuries in certain rear-impact collisions. Other standard safety features include dual front seat supplemental air bags, three-point seat belts with front seat belt pretensioners and load limiters, child safety rear door locks, child seat anchors, front and rear crumple zones, energy-absorbing steering column and knee bolsters.

Q45 comes with the Infiniti Vehicle Immobilizer. This system uses an electronically coded key, which is recognized by the ignition system. Without the correct code, the engine will not start.

Model Availability

The 2001 Q45 is offered in two models, Luxury and Touring. Luxury models come standard with almost every imaginable amenity, while the Touring Package adds a performance edge with 17-inch wheels and tires, performance-tuned suspension, a blackout grille and headlight treatment and performance-style steering wheel.

As with every Infiniti, the Q45’s long list of standard features leaves only a few options: the Infiniti in-dash navigation system, a 6-disc CD autochanger, heated seats and Infiniti Communicator.

The 2001 Q45 is protected by some of the best warranties in the industry: 4-year/60,000-mile Basic Coverage under the New Vehicle Limited Warranty; 6-year/70,000-mile Powertrain Coverage (protection for major engine and driveline components); a 5-year/50,000-mile New Vehicle Emission Control Limited Warranty; and a 7-year/unlimited mileage Corrosion Limited Warranty.
And no mention for the 02 Q45

Quote »All-New, Third Generation 2002 Infiniti Q45 DebutsRevolutionary Flagship Performance Luxury Sedan On Sale Now

The 2002 Infiniti Q45, the third generation of Infiniti’s flagship sedan, is a unique combination of exciting performance, dramatic styling, luxurious interior and innovative technology. It features a 340-horsepower V8 engine, voice-activated controls, an LCD information display screen, rearview monitor and one of the most powerful headlight systems in the world.

“The new Q combines the personality of the original model, while incorporating all the technological advancements made over the 12-year period between the first and the third generation,” said Mark McNabb, vice president and general manager, Infiniti Division. “It is designed to set a new standard in the highly competitive premium luxury class and brings the passion of Infiniti to life for a whole new generation of buyers.”

The 2002 Infiniti Q45, with its avant-garde styling and invigorating performance, went on sale in April 2001 at more than 150 Infiniti retailers nationwide.

“We have pursued the promise of the Infiniti brand to combine luxury and performance in new, unique and inspiring ways,” said McNabb. “The new Q is a powerful expression of the very best we have. A performance luxury sedan designed to set a new standard for Infiniti and the world.”

Design Realized

“At first glance, we want you to think dynamics,” said Mamoru Aoki, Q45 product chief designer. “We wanted the new Q45 to come across as strong, very impactful and very personal – different from the others in the segment.”

A large titanium-color grille and prominent Infiniti badge sets the tone for this exciting performance sedan. An integrated front bumper and fascia frames the grille. The car’s sculpted profile features a high-class silhouette, raised rear deck, large taillights, body-color side molding and door handles with chrome accent. The side view is completed with new 17- or 18-inch wheel designs, giving the Q45 a true performance look.

Versus the previous generation Q, the 2002 model is wider (72.6 inches vs. 71.7) and has a longer wheelbase (113 inches vs. 111.4), but the overall length remains the same at 199.6 inches – larger than almost any other car in class. The new Q is also more aerodynamically efficient than its predecessor, with a .30 drag coefficient (vs. .32).

Perhaps the most striking features of the new Q45’s exterior is the large, multi-lens projector High Intensity Discharge (HID) headlights. Seven individual lenses and a free-surface reflector design combine to provide a wide distribution beam pattern utilizing a large luminous flux, creating the most powerful headlight system in the world. Additionally, the beam area is wide enough that additional fog lights are not necessary.

For added luxury, Q45 is equipped with dual body-color heated and auto dimming outside mirrors with memory and auto reverse tilt for right hand door mirror.

The new Q45 is available in eight rich exterior colors, all chosen to complement the Q’s sophisticated body lines.

Performance Intensified

While the styling of the 2002 Q45 gives a strong impression, it’s what is under the hood that is most impressive. The Infiniti engineers’ primary objective was to greatly increase engine performance, but with an ear for quietness. The result is a 340-horsepower VK45DE 4.5-liter V8 with 333 lb-ft of torque – up 74 horsepower and 55 lb-ft from the previous generation. This is also more horsepower than most V8 competitors such as the Lexus LS430, Mercedes E430 and BMW 540 and 740 sedans.

The VK45DE is based on technology used in the award-winning VQ-series V6 engines found in the Infiniti I35 and QX4 and features technology developed from years of research and racing experience. Titanium valves, modular cylinder heads, microfinished crankshaft, lightweight pistons, super-silent single stage cam drive chain and a hydraulically driven cooling fan are all optimized for maximum performance while maintaining low noise levels.

In addition, the VK45DE is outfitted with a variable length air induction system and continuously variable valve timing control system to enhance the engine’s power delivery and operate efficiently.

The exceptional power of the 4.5-liter V8 is channeled through an all-new high-torque capacity electronically controlled 5-speed automatic with a manual shift mode. The 5-speed automatic, with its increased number of gear ratios, provides better acceleration and fuel mileage. Additionally, the new transmission is almost 50 pounds lighter than the 4-speed transmission it replaces.

An Electronic Torque-Demand Powertrain Control system manages engine power, throttle position, and the transmission gear selections to optimize smoothness and performance.

The new Q45’s four-wheel independent suspension has also been completely redesigned. The new Q45’s rigid body and compliant suspension system – independent strut front suspension with stabilizer bar and completely new multilink at the rear – provide a supple ride and “smooth and secure” handling feeling. Through corners, the new Q45 feels like a car half its size and displays an excellent balance of stability, secure handling feeling and first class ride comfort. Combined with fine-tuned vehicle speed-sensitive power rack-and-pinion steering, the Q45’s handling prowess is greatly increased and the vehicle is truly poised to take on the world’s best automobiles.

Braking is provided by 4-wheel vented discs with anti-lock function. The braking system contains two advanced features for increased braking effectiveness and controllability – Electronic Brake Distribution, which controls front and rear brake distribution depending on load condition (passengers and cargo) and Brake Assist, which reduces pedal effort in hard or panic braking situations. In preliminary testing of these systems, stopping distances were shortened 10 to 15 percent. A brake actuator, or active booster, in the braking system allows linear brake pressure to control smooth deceleration, in comparison to the driver’s ordinary braking action.

Standard on the new Q is Vehicle Dynamic Control, a system that controls brake pressure and engine torque automatically in understeer, oversteer or slippery road surface situations, assisting the Q driver only when necessary. Optional on the new Q is Adaptive Cruise Control, which uses the brakes, throttle and laser sensors, to maintain a set distance between the Q and a vehicle in front of the car.

Making contact with the road are standard 17-inch aluminum-alloy wheels with 225/55 all-season tires or optional 18-inch wheels with champagne finish and 245/45 Z-speed rated all-season tires. For the first time on any Infiniti, optional 17-inch run-flat tires are now available. These tires are capable of being driven 50 miles after a puncture at speeds up to 55 mph. Standard on all Q45s is a low-tire pressure monitoring system.

Advanced Luxury and Technology

The fully redesigned Q45 interior features a hand-crafted look. All interior surfaces are covered in rich textured materials, including soft leather and genuine Bird’s Eye Maple wood. The interior, larger by 9.7 cu.ft. (107.1 vs. 97.4), was designed to seat five passengers in comfort.

For the driver, the Q’s cockpit features genuine wood and hand-stitched leather-wrapped steering wheel and large, round instruments with electro-illuminescent illumination. To start the Q, an electronic key system is used. This key is easier to carry and provides improved security with an ID transponder that is virtually impossible to copy.

Once the Q is turned on, the Vehicle Information System (VIS) comes to life. This system, with a 7.0-inch LCD screen (or 5.8-inch without the Navigation Package), is mounted at the highest position on the instrument panel for better visibility and greater operability. The VIS integrates and displays vehicle operation information ranging from audio settings, climate control and maintenance updates to vehicle settings such as auto door lock and headlight delay.

In addition, the LCD screen can be used to view what’s behind the Q when equipped with the rearview monitor system. The monitor operates when reverse gear is selected, displaying an image using a small camera mounted near the rear license plate.

The DVD-driven Infiniti Navigation System, with a 3-D Birdview™ display, contains the entire United States mapping on one disc. This feature eliminates the need to change from one regional disc to another when traveling cross-country.

Infiniti’s first-ever voice recognition system, developed with second generation Visteon Voice Technology™, can control the Bose® audio system, HVAC system and select navigation system functions. The system provides audible feedback with beeps to signify listening or errors as well as verbal phrases. This feature increases Q45’s control level because the driver’s hands can stay on the wheel at all times.

The Q45’s 300-watt premium Bose® sound system will continue to set the bar for factory-installed audio systems. It features eight speakers with a 12-inch woofer, a glove compartment mounted 6-disc CD changer, digital architecture and a new standard in noise compensation called Bose AudioPilot Noise Compensation Circuit Technology. Revised insulation assists in enhancing the audio system’s quality as well as aiding general quietness in the new Q.

Other features of the Q45’s interior include an instrument panel with fully integrated switchgear, 10-way driver’s and 8-way front passenger’s seat with memory and a dual-zone automatic temperature control system. Infiniti’s signature in-dash analog clock adds the final touch to the instrument panel.

Rear seat passengers are just as coddled in the Q45 as the front occupants. More rear leg and head room create a less cramped environment. An available power rear sunshade along with manual rear door window sunshades, eases the heat from the sun, while available power rear seats with adjustable backrest angle and an oversize center armrest with rear audio and climate controls create a limousine-like environment for the rear passengers.

Q45’s interior is available in three colors, Willow, Latte and Graphite, designed to complement exterior colors and interior features.

Safety Solidified

The 2002 Q45 features myriad standard safety features, including dual front supplemental air bags with dual-stage inflators that sense collision levels and react accordingly. Front seat occupants also get supplemental side impact air bags and front seat active head restraints, which protect against excessive backward head movement and reduce whiplash neck injuries suffered in low-speed rear-end collisions.

The newest Q45 safety feature is side curtain supplemental air bags that deploy from the roof for head protection. These cushions protect both front and rear seat passengers. Also standard is the LATCH rigid bar child seat anchorage system (Lower Anchors and Tethers for CHildren). All Q45s are equipped with the Infiniti Vehicle Immobilizer System, an advanced anti-theft system.

Optional Luxury

Q45 comes standard with a full array of luxury and convenience features incorporating everything from heated and auto dimming outside mirrors to 10-way power driver’s seat with power lumbar adjustment.

An available Premium Package features a long list of luxurious amenities including rear audio controls, rear seat memory and rear view monitor. Q45 buyers can also opt for the Navigation Package or an aggressive Sport Package with available 18-inch wheels.

All Infinitis come standard with The Total Ownership Experience (TOE), a philosophy that has fostered a unique relationship between retailers and purchasers of Infiniti vehicles.

“Twelve years ago, we began with a vision for the future: combining luxury, performance and uncompromising service to create a superior automotive experience called Infiniti,” said McNabb. “The 2002 Infiniti Q45 leads the way into a new dimension of driving enjoyment and advanced technology.”
And to add to the confusion ...

The gasket listed for a 2002 Q45 rear diff indicates R200V, thus I would be inclined to believe it is a VLSD.

Hope you enjoyed the reading material.

Hope you enjoyed the reading material.
Okay, and "VLSD" means....?

Does anyone know the amount of gear lube needed to do a diff flush?

I'm taking the car in two weeks from now for a diff flush, and I think I want to bring my own Mobil 1 75-90 synthetic gear lube. I need to know how much to buy.

Thanks.

Should be listed in the FSM (maybe owners manual), if you don't have access to that, call Joe, he'll know/look it up.

Viscous Limited Slip Differential

Less than a quart. No flush, it is a drain and fill.

3 and 1/8 pint [1.5 liters] is a lot more than " less than a quart"

Never take anyone's word [even mine] always double check your copy of FSM or you'll be hitching to an auto parts store.

Too many of us have a habit of posting from memory and don't double check our decline. [I'm 59 so the FSM is always next to keyboard].

I thought it was two pint bottles, so it was two quart bottles. Doh!

Acrobat7 is having trouble with my FSM for some reason.

The F50 do not have a factory LSD unit. Instead, they decided to just use VDC and traction control since the most of the parts are already there for the ABS. Pressing the VDC button raises the traction control threshold but doesn't completely turn it off. As far as I have seen on the forums, I'm the only one to have installed an LSD into an F50. The gasket doesn't mean anything as pretty much all of Nissan and Infiniti V8 and V6 RWD cars use the same differential housing. When I had my VLSD installed, I also had the Nismo finned diff cover installed to replace the regular cover. It is actually listed for the G35/350Z.

So, can I still use "Mobil 1 Synthetic Gear LubeLS 75W-90 ", intended for limited slip diffs, or should I just let the dealer use whatever they stock?

Like I said, in Phoenix, go with 75W-140 synthetic.

The amount is small and there is no cooling.

Disappointing about the F50. Wake up Infiniti!

Okay, but still use the "LS" stuff, or ?It seems that Mobil 1 synthetic gear lube is all "LS", according to their web site.

BMW stopped the general use of LSD in 1995 except on M/Z series and a few other models as an expensive dealer option.

"Viscous LSDs are less efficient than mechanical types, that is, they "lose" some power. They do not stand up well to abuse, particularly any sustained load which overheats the silicone results in sudden permanent loss of the LSD effect.[4] They do have the virtue of failing gracefully, reverting to semi-open diff behaviour, without the graunching of metal particles / fragmented clutches. Typically a visco-differential that has covered 70,000 miles or more will be functioning largely as an open differential. The silicone oil is factory sealed in a separate chamber from the gear oil surrounding the rest of the diff.

This is not serviceable and when the diff's behaviour deteriorates, the VLSD centre is replaced.

Lexus has never used VLSD or LSD.........................

For those interested in the latter I offer some diversion:http://www.flashback.se/archive/my_problem_child/
