Once again, we revisit the cupholder issue.

I am a persistent little pecker, aren't I?

A friend of mine has a manufacturing contract and is considering developing and mass-producing cupholders for the first-gen Q. I get to be the guinea pig for product development.

The idea is, to get a black cupholder that slides into the center console of the 90-93 Q45, and is flush with the height of the dark brown center console/storage area. Basically, an easily installed high-quality shell will two plastic holes and cupholders mounted inside it to accomodate standard cups.

So he asked me to basically take a rough poll... if a clean, matching, nice cupholder was available, would you buy it for about $30-$60?

A similar product can be developed as well for the 94-96 Q, assuming there is enough interest.

I wonder how many takers there are for this device which promises potential $1,000 dollar repairs to the electronics in the console? Seems like the doors would have less potential for damage, ala the Wal-Mart clip-ons (that should be a cultural hint!)

Now, if you can work out the ice bucket for the Dom for the rear passengers which won't spill, sweat nor require ice, I could be tempted. Especially if it could be used to chill the intake charge on a temporary basis for passing maneuvers. Who needs cups when you have to hang-on?

I bet Reggie's wife doesn't.

Sounds good. I say post a pic, when you get the prototype made. I bet every Qowner has, at one time had a drink in his hand, while in his/her car. The big question is, what is the Price point where people say its a good investment.

For a cup holder, I would say $30.00 is the limit.

I'm with Jeff. $30 would be a top price point on a cup holder for most people. I might pay as much as $45 or $50 more depending on how it looks and works. We've all beat the cup holder vs. no cup holder issue to death. I drink in the car most every time I drive it - if I have to replace something under there, so be it. If there's a good cup holder that may help me not spill it.

A 44oz Lipton Brisk fits quite nicely between my legs for those long trips across the AZ desert. Plus, it has the added benefit of keeping the little hitman cool as well. :D

Jesda, if your guides fail before your cupholder is installed, you can send Heath the prototype. :D

Hahaha... The little hitman :D :D ........ Doesnt he ever get frostbit????

I would be more apt to get the walmart thing...... 30 on a cupholder is a little too much for me right now..... I can make due with the pseudo-cupholders that the 94-96 has..... It can fit one large mcdonalds coke no problem..... And the driver gets the cupholder, so as long as Im good then its all good!!!

If it was more around 15 or 20, I might go for it...... Maybe see if they could design one for the back seat.......

The single-cup plastic pop-out, fold-down cup holder that hangs over the passenger seat on my wife's 1995 Contour costs between $60-$80, and there are a lot more of those running around than Q45s. I don't know how much it cost because the service manager was so embarrassed when he was informed of its true price he only charged her his guesstimate of $30-$35.__________________Brian1995 Q45 & Q45t

Has the little hitman discovered his special cooler vent under the steering wheel?

Not as high as the $600 repair bill for the fried electronics for the shift lock and seat heaters when that cup start leaking or gets sloshed in an emergency maneuver. :help

Finally, after almost a year of searching and pondering, I've found a solution for the cupholder issue.

First, here's pics:

XM tuner, followed by the cupholder in the closed position.

XM tuner, followed by the cupholder in the open position. It has a spring-actuated lip to adjust to different sizes. Also, it has a drip tray underneath to avoid spillage.

Next, I'm going to order two for the back seat arm rest.

Cost: $17 Shipped USPS Priority, available at ultimatecupholders.com. Called the "Fischer" folding cupholder. You can also get it on ebay for $16 shipped.

The plastic feels surprisingly durable, and you can have it mount to a horizontal or vertical surface.

3M extra strength double sided mounting tape is what I used to mount my XM tuner and cupholder. The cupholder came with rails and screws but I wasn't interested in drilling. $3 at Wal-Mart for a small roll. It holds surprisingly well, and removes cleanly.

Jesda,

If the XM tuner weren't there, would it fit there? I think the center console narrows a bit as you go forward...

It does narrow a bit. The lady who owned my car before me had a sweet custom cupholder made. I'll take a picture and post it up.

Got to agree with ludicrous damages possible - all for the sake of a quick jolt of caffeine or sugar - Want to drive "con brio" ? - ditch da drink !

One beautiful option (w/a ludicrious price) can put a 12oz to 1 liter bottle out of the way from harming those tender lil' elektrical thing-a-ma-jigs -

You can find a whole page on this gem at Cupholder Views

I’m not sure this location is the best as it might hit the “lead” foot with a larger bottle - yo Gregg, if not FTSBs, can ya get a Stainless or Al fab guy working on a pattern here ? Hmmmmmm, a branded NICO holder !

Before I placed it behind the XM tuner, I removed the tuner and put it there first. It fit fine, and I was about to mount it vertically (opens down) or horizontally (opens up). But then I was stuck with where to put the XM tuner.

For extra protection, I suppose I could remove the black padding in the console, line it with cellophane or plastic, and then put the padding back in place on top of it.

LOL! @ Brian

Also, Jesda, wassup with the PROZAC pen also conveniently located behind the cupholder, behind the XM tuner?

That would explain the look on your face for the chain guide pic!

I picked up a cheapie dual cupholder at AutoZone, adjustable grip, bolts in the existing holes the phone was mounted with.

Works for me, only for bottles with lids though. An Arizona ice tea fits nidely, and I can keep my armrest down if it's just me & no drinking passenger.

I like the little custom jewel on the floorboard I think. I'm however getting used to the cup holder being "in" the armrest of my '94. I guess I shouldn't complain. At least I have one, right?

Oops, sorry, too busy trying to make a funny....that wasn't funny anyway.

I saw Z A C, didn't notice the A that came before it.

Getting a real pill education, I'm zinging on Fioricet (sp?) now celebrating my first Migraine headache.

Woohooo! Pass me another La Fin Du Monde!!!!! :alcoholic

After no booze in a week & the desire to blow my brains out to make the pain stop, I'm just happy being normal for the moment.

LOL, I went and looked in the car and I was like "What Prozac pen? Did I throw it out?" Then I found it. It said Tiazac, used to treat hypertension.

My parents are in cardiology and I work at one of their clinics, so I keep a bunch of pens and mousepads and notepads that the pharmeceutical companies send.

One of these days I'm gonna be walking around town on low sleep not realizing I threw on a Viagra or Levitra shirt! :)

I had a Risperdal (anti-psychotic med used to make the voices in your head stop) clock hanging in my bay at the dealership. It inspires confidence in my quality of work. My wife has an administrator job at the local elementary school, and she never has to buy pens thanks to stuff I get from drug reps.
