When I just recently got a radiator I opted for one without a radiator cap because I thought the fill cap was on the upper radiator hose in the Q45 and there was no reason to have 2 fill caps. I found a few pictures of Q radiators and it appears they have a fill cap too. My new radiator has no hook up for a coolant overflow tank.

How can I hook up a coolant overflow? I'd assume I could tap into the upper coolant hose near the cap to install a fitting, right? I don't think the Nissans use the setup where the coolant overflow hose connects above the radiator cap.

My '94 doesn't have a cap on the radiator, you can see in this old photo of mine that the cap is on a tube near the plenum

Nevermind! I was inspired to go look and what do you know? There is a cap on the radiator as well, drivers side under the plastic cover. Also, the overflow does come out under the cap...

See pics...

In the short and long run your Q will be better served by trashing the WRONG radiator and replacing it with the correct one!!!!!!!

A doityourself hack job pn the aluminum filler neck can fail at any moment then where are you ......needing a new engine.

You can't just add a hose into the upper line. The system needs pressure to cool properly. It works on the basis of your typical pressure cooker at home. The system can cool over boiling point (212F) without boiling over because under pressure water can sustain higher temps before boiling, or something like that.

You could either let it vent to the atmosphere but will lose coolant to an extent. Or you could add a pressurized tank like this one. They will sustain the pressure in the system.

Or you could just have a fitting welded onto the radiator. Any competent Tigger can weld your rad no problem.

Hah...I never would have known it came with two caps if I didn't read the "Radiator R&R" article on Q45.org.

So I've already got the overflow tank from the old engine, it's just a matter of hooking it up. I'm not quite sure if I can have someone just TIG a new filler neck on the radiator or not. I'll have to go talk to a few shops and see what they say.

And Tech....no worries as I won't be destroying a Q when my cheap aftermarket replacement radiator fails. It will just be a lousy Pathfinder with a VH. Thanks everyone.
