Is it safe to replace the rotor and pads on only one wheel? or should I do both sides of the car.

I have a 96 Q45 and noticed a chattering sound which lead to pulling the rear wheels off to discover that the pads on one side were loose enough to move around in the caliper and make the noise. The rotor looks scored and I'm planning on replacing the pads and rotors. The opposite side looks fine and I don't see the need to replace them as there is little to no wear. I think the pad is loose cause I left out some of the shims or clips that hold the pad in place last time I replaced the pads.

Any input is appreciated.

Unfortunately brake works has the potential to affect innocents otherwise we would let INSURED owners commit suicide. "I think the pad is loose cause I left out some of the shims or clips that hold the pad in place last time I replaced the pads."

If you made one mistake the probability is high that you made others!

They should be replaced in pairs... any difference in stopping ability left to right could cause you to go sideways in a heavy braking emergency situation. Even if you used a rotor and set of pads of the same brand from the same production run and build date - the difference in wear, glazing, etc. would still create differences.

Keep in mind that this is for optimum stopping power and performance. I also believe tires should only be replaced in sets of four... or at a very minimum in pairs matched front to rear. Some people are still walking around at this very minute breathing, talking, and enjoying life who replace the worst tire one at a time... it's all in your tolerance for risk, and as Q45Tech said, how much liability you're willing to take on in terms of injuring others if something goes wrong.

Turn your rotors, and since you are trying to do a quality job, measure the lateral and radial runout on the hubs (after you clean them) so you know they are in the very liberal OEM specification in the FSM.

At least read enough to know how to adjust and service your parking brake drums and associated linkage.

Thanks for the input. The rotor is getting replaced rather than having it turned. (Too thin) As suspected the shims/clips are missing. I bought oem pads from the dealership. They do not come with any additional hardware other than the pads. They dealer ship told me the hardware kit would be $70. This seems a little steep. Before I call Infiniti of Scottsdale does anyone know of an aftermarket source for this hareware kit? I check with the local part store but they did not show any additional hardware. Their guess was it would come with the pads.

Hardware kit only available thru the dealer, and I agree, it is super overpriced for what it is,always has been. Be sure to inspect rubber boots that the caliper pins slide into, as these tend to deteriorate with time and massive heat from brakes and when worn allow dirt to interfere with the caliper movement.

Take the parts back to the dealer and go with Joe and his crew at

our best friend for keeping our cars up to snuff and on the road.

Last time I got an OEM shim kit it was about $43.

OEM rotors? I prefer the stillen Brembos Joe has on special occasionally. Avoid cheap generic Chinese junk rotors.

Presume you know about
