I have a 2002 Q45 Premium Package and really enjoy my car - upgraded from a M3.

I have a problem with the noise-compensation feature of my Bose audio system. I have been unable to establish how this feature is supposed to work or verify that it is working. When driving on a road with a distinct road noise as backround, I have been unable to observe any difference in the audio quality when I activate or de-activate the noise compensation feature via the audio menu (it is my understanding that the effect is immediate when activated). My dealer mechanic has admitted to not knowing how it is supposed to work or how he can verify that it is working.

My expectation is that when noise-compensation is activated, I should hear a significant reduction in the background noise (similar to the Bose noise-compensation earphones I use on an airplane).

Would appreciate any feedback as to how the noise-compensation feature is supposed to work and how I can verify that it is indeed working.

Jason is the expert on the systems in the 3rd Generation Q45 and will respond when he sees your post. It might be a day or so.

And welcome to the board.

Congrats on the new car!

It's actually called Bose AudioPilot™. It "listens" to the sound sources from in and outside the cabin and "compensates" for "Noise" by adding a opposite type of signal to give you better sound quality. It's the same technology found in the headsets airplane pilots use. It adjusts aural output to reduce the effects of engine noise, downshifting big rigs or backseat drivers on sonic quality, like their Bose™ headphones...

I bet it would especially work well with a crying baby and totally cancel it out! Well, maybe not. :D

The Q also has the speed sensitve Volume, which justs Boosts volume and certain eq. settings to compensate for the added noise from acheiving higher speeds.

More info on the Bose™ website.

I can't speak for the Audio Pilot feature in the car, but I know the Bose Headsets are one of the best investments I've ever made.

I think Audio Pilot probably makes more of an impact on the Voice Activation feature than perceived audio quality.

Jason,

Glad to hear that AudioPilot is supposed to work similar to Bose headsets by adding "negative" noise. However, I still do not know if my system is working because I can not hear any perceptible change in the audio quality when I toggle the noise-compensating setting while driving with signifcant road and wind noise. Any info as to where the inside and outside mics are located or does it use the voice-activation mic for monitoring the internal cabin noise.

Any suggestions as to how I can verify that AudioPilot is indeed working. On the Bose headset I use in airplanes, the difference in audio-quality is dramatic when you turn the noise-compensation feature on and off (it even works well with crying babies a seat or two away!). Maybe my expectation that I will hear any significant noise reduction from AudioPilot is unrealistic - but then, if you can't hear it, is it a useable feature at all.

Try this. When the stereo is on, say loudly "aaaaaaaaahhhhhhhhh" for 20 seconds continuously. At the same time, go into them menu and turn the feature on and off. You should hear the difference and it should be apparent.

If you can't, maybe call bose and ask them?

On another note, did you see find the special hidden displays in the Q?

One cool feature lets you turn on the rear camera at any time!

The full write-ups on the hidden displays are now published online!

I have an 02 Q45 as well and my system works fine. I do notice a difference when it is on and off. I also have the Bose noise cancelling headphones. The impact of the system in your Q will not be as dramatic as the headphones. They don't have the car system tuned as well, probably for safety reasons. If you can't hear a siren or car honking at you, then that is bad. Try driving by a road crew running a jackhammer -- you will notice the system working.

Jason - Do you know if the hidden display works on the FX45? I just bought one for my wife and am looking for some tricks. I would really like to dissable the Navigation system verification that pops up each time you start the car.

There's no audio pilot option on the FX. It's only on the Q and I think in the M.

As far as the Nav Nag Screen, that's part of the code on the Nav DVD, so it's not accessable from the hidden menus.

There's been a lot of talk on the freshalloy forums (best FX forum by far, but the technical detail is sparse compaired to NICO) about turning off the screen. Most say it's not possible, but I'd gather a few days with the FX and the Nav disk is all it would take to find and kill the nag code. It's in the startup script so it should be a fairly easy mod once you locate the string.

But you'd have to find a way to burn it back out to the correct DVD format and that could take a while.

For those who don't know... computer files are organized heroically—ROOT>LEVEL 1>LEVEL 2> and so on—so the file that you are looking for will not be in a sub-folder, but in the ROOT of the DVD (the first thing you see when you open the DVD on your computer). There may be as many as ten or twelve files in the root; you would have to examine them all until you find the one that you are looking for. I did this, and selected "show all files" and all I get are .dat files.

I would have thought all you would need to is browse the DVD and find the image file (probably a .bmp file) and make note of the file name, so that when you see the code that directs the Nav-System to display it, you will recognize it and be able to delete it. BUT, I can't find that either.

All .dat files:

I think you'd need to mount the DVD under linux to be able to read the actual boot record and partition. I doubt windoze will see or let you see the actual file in question.

I'm sure you could cancel out that part of the startup but getting it back on disk will probably be a real chore, I'd imagine there's probably a CRC or even just a checksum that corresponds to the disk to keep everything in check.

Some of the old german CD based systems used to require a dealer only CD to be inserted to "prep" the system to accept an updated NAV CD. There might be something similar in the infiniti system to keep the disks legit.

I just did that. I got version 6.1 of the DVD update that just came out, and had to use a special dvd program disk before I put the new dvd in. It took a good 5 minutes. I got to keep it too. Hmm, I wonder what's on it?

Yes! You know, I fogot to mention, there is a new agree screen with the update and it now has a marble background. I wonder if it's the program disk that changed it. I will throw it in and link a photo to what I can see...

Well, nothing much on the program cd. Inside that main folder are two other folders with a .dat in each one...

I wish I could get rid of that darn I agree screen.
