I am ready to breakdown and buy the darlington transistor, but I need some hand holding.1) whats the exact part I need to order2) what is the site to order the part from? i remember reading i could pick it up for about $65 with a certain promo code or something?3) what is the link for the directions to remove the glove box to replace the transistor?4) what is the link to swap out the transistor5) while the glove box is removed, is there something back there that I can clean up to improve the efficiency of the AC because my air blows cool and not cold (I remember reading a posting about cleaning something up back there.

Please direct me with directions that are "idiot proof". Thanks!!!!

Yes, the blower motor is probably dirty and caused too much current drain.

Nice post by Elwesso about cleaning the fan motor. Some other posts about repairing mixer doors.

Along with Elwesso's, I have a decent writeup with pics! on how to change the blower motor and clean the fan. This may not be your particular problem, but the pictures might help you once you start digging around in there.

More than likely the blower motor resistor.

That's what I did. Fixed the problem. I even bought the resistor used from someone here for $20. Look at someone parting out a Q, like Goody.

AFter you replace your resistor we can work on fixing the AC as well.

Wish members would use the correct part name TRANSISTOR instead of some imaginary resistor. That is a physical impossibility to provide a continuous variable speed. The Q fan has a least 8 speeds

Resistors were last used 20 years ago when speeds were limited to off, low, medium, and high.

No reason to buy it new. Check out NICO's Infiniti Parts Forum:

I personally think that it should be regular maintenance to take your glovebox out, clean the evap and the blower motor and you wont have these problems!

we all konw that the blower motor drawing too much current is what fries the TRANSISTOR

I had the same problem a few weeks ago. I did everything according to q45.org. My brushes in my blower motor 'seemed' (what do I know) to have enough life left so I just cleaned everything out, slapped it together, installed a junkyard transistor, DONE! Fixed, thanks NICO and Q45.org

UPDATE: Turned out to be the transistor on my 96 Q45 that was causing the blower to only operate on HIGH. I went to AIS in San Diego and they referred to it not as a transistor or resistor, but an amplifier.

Now, how do I get the AC to blow colder?

Thanks for everyones help and remember I aint no mechanic, but love this forum for learning and the help! So, please use layperson speak.thanks

How many miles are on your Q? Still on original compressor?

Is AIS Jerry Tucker's old shop? Surely they would have diagnosed the cooling system?

When the last time you flushed the system and replaced the drier?

13 years is a long, a very long time for a Q HVAC system to function [depending on hours of operation].................usually the $2000 rehab occurs about then [11-13 years] depending on local conditions.

Compressor, receiver dryer, condenser, fan motor, etc.

The failed darlington resistor is the hard to replace component of the fan control amplifier which is the part you just purchased. Most of us don't have the skills, knowledge or parts to replace the resistor so buying the fan control amp assembly for $65 is a better option. I disassembled my amp and the cooling blades sitting on my desk at work make an interesting conversation piece (has that been to the moon and back?).

If the air is coming out cool but not cool enough then the freon probably just needs topping off. No tank is air tight forever, especially a compressed gas system. If the shop suspects a slow leak (based on what you tell them) they'll add a bit of dye to the freon and inspect the system for leaks.

I had one of the Schraeder valves replaced on the 94Q last summer with the same warmish air issue. You're probably looking at a $100 bill to have the AC system topped off and inspected. Replacing the leaky valve was only about $40 more.
