I'm a new member of the forum, and I have an unusual request: I want to learn about the Q45's active suspension (early- to mid-90s, I believe) for use in an entirely different car. I'm building a 1970 280SL which has all-1994 Corvette running gear. I want to replace the Corvette transverse leaf springs, which give a severe ride, and decided to do hydraulic suspension. Initially I thought of using the suspension from a late-70s 450SEL 6.9, but it's a crude setup compared with Infiniti's.
The curb weight will be about 3,000 pounds, so my first concern is whether the active suspension can adapt to a lighter car. Beyond that, is the system easily removed from the car, or are the electronics woven into the rest of the wiring harness? Is the active suspension controlled by a stand-alone computer? Is static level control achieved by hydraulic or electronic controls? Is compliance in the hydraulic system provided by sealed gas chambers?
From reading the postings, I read that TexasOil is the one to talk to about the active suspension. Is he available for consultation? Before I buy a parts car and remove the active suspension, I'd like to learn enough so I make the right choices.
I'd love to hear from as many of you as possible, to shed light on my zillion questions. Thanks in advance; you also may call me at 407/293-7030. -------Jim Rothrock
