Reading posts on the Q's performance once it is on a "roll" does any have any data on numbers like the 40 - 60 mph time, 50 - 70 and so on and how does it compare with other competitive cars of its time. I am asking because the quarter mile time is probalby hampered by the slow start off line and doesn't give a true picture of how it feels under real world conditions

50-80 times are what we go by here

I check mine everytime im on the highway...

A stock 94 should run about 5.5..... I think my old Q when it was running perfect ran about 5.3, and this Q is running about 5.5 (still have some things to find, should be closer to 5.2 with JWT and maybe 4.08)....

Ironically, my Q ran 6 second ones before.. I hardly felt the different... Even 1 second is hard to detect..... Id seen as high as 6.5 seconds.....

Heres what you do... This applies to all Q45 owners

Get going 40 mph... Then floor it.. Start watch at 50, and end at 80...

I know Q45tech has posted a lot on this, and I cant find anything since the search function is kinda goofy...

Dennis, should a 94 with JWT and maybe 4.08 run about 5.3 50-80

ok I am going to try this, but does anyone have data for other cars to compare with. Although mid 5's sounds fast I wonder how the following cars would compare

Caddy STSBMW 540BMW 740Merc E400Jaguar XJ

To be fair I guess we should look at the competitors say in the age range 1990 to 1996

50 to 70 mph "passing times" is part of the Car and Driver standard testing ...Quote »We also perform two acceleration tests, from 30 to 50 mph and from 50 to 70, in a vehicle's highest gear. In vehicles with manual transmissions, this test measures how well a car's gearing matches the torque curve of its engine. With automatics, the test begins in top gear and then the car downshifts automatically under hard acceleration. This provides information about transmission responsiveness and actual passing times, but any comparison of results between manuals and automatics is meaningless.[/quote]

Check this out. It provides some interesting calculators to predict quarter mile times etc

Most 5-6 speed AT have a disadvantage since there is a gear shift in the 60-75 mph range.........on a Q 2nd gear 50 is 3,700 rpm and 80 is 6,000. Where it counts on a 2 lane road pass.

Mercedes and Chrysler have an interesting 6-7 speed AT [2] Different 3rd gears depending on whether you are down shifting to pass or starting out from a stop [a quarter mile gear for magazines].

When you study 4 speed gears you find the Q did a good job since they really had to trade off 4th [for gas milege].The driver reaction time plus the downshift time is the key. The indecision time vs. distance.

Selecting 2nd gear manually during the pass after you down shift means you won't hit the rev limiter till REAL [6900/740= 92+ mph] tires will swell from speed forces so 95 mph..................... that should be ENOUGH for any situation.

50-70 mph is 1.7 + 1.8= 3.5 PLUS downshift and reaction lag 0.7-1.0-1.2 seconds 4.2-4.7 seconds...........about as good as any modern 4.5V8 hauling 4300 pounds............better than most out there.

Rex, are you sure that number is correct about the BMW 540i? I have a '95 540i with auto trans and it has pretty much replaced the 92 active Q (still drive the Q sometimes). While they are both very strong in a 55-75mph passing situation, I think the 540i is quicker. Both of my cars are stock with exception of wheels. The one thing that is lame about the 540i is that it has a 129mph speed limit on it. I've had the Q up to 145 but never had a safe cop-free road to actually see if I could hit the speed limit on it.
