My Q45a is not liking the winter months

So far...

Two new active leaks old hoses. Will fix when I get the other 5 accumulators soon.

One air hose leak that made it so I couldn't start the Q for 5 days.

For a while it was a little harder than normal to get it out of park. Now the Shifter won't move from park.

I must override it with the shiftlock button under the little tab.

Also I will not downshift It will not upshift

It stays in 2nd gear if I move the shifter below neutral I tried to manually and it still will not go into 1st gear or third.

Is it time for a new transmission?I will run the onboard Diag tomorrow and post the results but any speculation would appreciated.

Hmm -

Sounds awfully similar to what happens to my Accord sometimes in the very cold here in Wisconsin. When I start the car, it is stuck, according to the dash light, in "S" (optimistically standing for "sport") and won't shift out of 2nd. Called the dealer, and he said it's likely the $500-ish transmission circuit board or computer. He did suggest that I could try disconnecting the negative battery cable to force a reset of the computer. It works. I now travel with a 10mm wrench in the glove compartment. - Pat

Hmm, it kinda sounds like when I drove without a TCU.. it locks in 3rd gear...

See what the diag has to say.....

I tried to run the onboard diag and it went to AT CHECK mode and that was all.

I did move it to 3rd and depressed the accelerator fully then released it.moved it to 2nd then 1st then I depressed the accelerator fully then released it again It just sat in AT CHECK mode..???

how long does the Diag take?I waited about 2 mins. and tried it again and it did the same thing.

I unpluged the battery to try and reset the system and I will try it again.

has anyone else had this happen.

Is it time for a new transmission @ 120,000mi ?

If so thats WEAK and I might not ever buy another Q45 HG50 or G50.

I'll go with the Q45 F50's body class.

If it is toast how much is the Level 10 transmission and a new lightweight driveshaft?

I would thing it would be an electrical issue.EVERY NISSAN I have EVER owned (except the last Q45 G50) has had trouble with the electrical system in one way or another.

I've never heard of a failed transmission that -stayed- in third. When the transmission on my Mazda MPV overheated, it -would- downshift but -not- upshift; it didnt just stay stuck in a particular gear. In addition, it was fine after a day of cooling off.

I doubt transmission failure.

Im leaning toward an electronic component as you are. I wish I could tell you more.

my OEM transmission went at about 120K....I had never known about the transmission cooler until they rebuilt the transmission and installed a transmission cooler.

If it is your transmission....I would suggest ya think about the 90-93 transmission as a replacement for the faster acceleration gears at the same price as a 94-96 replacement.

OK, do this for the AT check thing

Shift the car into drive

Then do the thing on the trip computer..... It has to be in drive when you initiate the AT CHECK procedure..... Then shift to 3, hit the gas, then 2, then 1, then gas...

You probably wont have any codes unless you had a TRANSMISSION MALFUNCTION light on..... But maybe... it does sound electrical, but generally transmission electronics are pretty solid...

Start at AT-75 in the FSM and do the electrical component inspection..... Everything can be tested right on the TCU...

Should the Q45 be driven while in this state?

I drove it home on the highway and kept it below 80MPH and she did just fine. used alot more gas though.

Where is the TCU located?I'm looking in the FSM but having a hard time finding it.

like I said, if its locked itself into gear it most likely means something else has failed.....

Id recommend taking it to the dealer or testing all the pins like I said earlier.....

I will be testing my pins with a multi meter this weekend.

I'm short on time this week the dealer sent me to TransCo for a Diag and the computer @ TransCo could not talk to my Q..

My onboard Diag won't finish I think it might be the TCU itself the guy couldn't be sure if the it was his Diag machine or my cars computer so he sent me back to the dealer. I wanted to test it before I go to the dealer to save a little money plus my dealer alway wants me to replace parts that don't need it like when my old Fuel pump sending unit died and they had me replace the PUMP, FPCU, Sending unit and all relays. but if they are the only people that can talk to my Q I have no choise.
