Yet another strange problem... I recently resolved an engine surging problem by replacing the fuel filter and cleaning the MAF (did them both at the same time, so I cannot say which was the actual solution). New problem has emerged, my Q (99 with 180K) has started to unexpectedly shut down. Happened twice so far, neither event has had consistent situations, just driving along and all of the sudden the engine shuts down. When running the engine seems to be working just fine, smooth idle, no noticeable skipping, getting good fuel economy (for the Q). I am a little stumped as to what the problem might be. I know I am way overdue for a spark plug, wires, distributor rotor and cap change. But, I would expect noticeable engine problems if those were the issue, in addition to the shut down problem.

Any thoughts please?

Does it restart easily or does it have to sit for a while before it starts? Also, does it seem to die after a specific amount of time?

I would check the fuel pump relay and the fuel pump fuse to make sure they are seated well.

Had that problem with another vehicle.Fuel pump was failing. It couldn't keep up with the demand at higher RPM's or when I wanted to accelerate hard. It would restart no problem too. Very frustrating.New fuel pump fixed the problem.I'd put a pressure gauge on the fuel line first, and go from there.
