I've got the thing unbolted and a good 3" from the motor, but it's not coming off. What needs to be disconnected to release the torque converter from the flywheel? Is there a circlip or bolts or should I just keep pulling?

Yes, there's bolts that attach the torque converter to the flexplate (flywheel).

Might be easier to push the trans back in a bit to release the tension on the flexplate.

Thanks Heavy. Where do you get access to them, because I have yet to see them?
