I did the search and somewhere in the massive amount of information on the chain guide issue may have been what I need advice on. I will continue to read the search results. The saga of my chain guide replacement is over in the Q45 forum, but I need to know what my next step should be. The dealer (Nissan) has now had my car for a week. He informed me today that they have to take it apart again because they must have let the timing chain jump. The car would not start for them. I am sure they must have done lots of cranking prior to deciding to take it apart again. What damage if any could have resulted from this? What should my demands be if any? I have done lots of back yard work so I am sympathetic to mistakes and have been very patient to this point.

Not a lot of links to be missed before vavles start hitting pistons. If they admit to cranking it (hopefully they hand turned it first), the next question is how many links was it off?

Might try:

The real only solution is to take the upper and lower front covers off and retime the engine

Why dealers who are smart [and don't have the expertise of a tech who does a chain guide job weekly/monthly] do the more expensive chain replacement as standard.

Most techs [paid by the job] are not so willing to risk 2 days pay if they make a mistake! Why the inexpensive $1200 route is best left to the experts or the very lucky.

Even T3 only has a 9 out of 10 probabilty of not having to remove the chains and starting over............10% risk is acceptable to us but I'll bet in some shops it's 50/50 or worse.
