I noticed the thread about wanting a Q faq, and i have been working on this for the last week. but, before someone else starts to make their own i decided to start posting mine. this is only engine and transmission specs. car dimensions, year by year changes, performance times, maintenance, mods, etc. will follow shortly when i have the time. if anything is incorrect please post the correct info. also post your opinions. i think any changes that need to be made should be made before it is made a sticky by a mod, therefore not having responses in the faq. i would also like to thank dennis in advance for all the info he's posted. i will use a lot of his posts in the faq. all data is from these boards, various internet sites, magazines and the 94 service manual, as that's the year i have. i would have included redline but i can't find numbers that agree for the 02 Q, anywhere from 6600 to 6900.

Wasn't the 2002 drive lower numerically than 3.13?

Is the Transmission for the second genration Q (1997-2001) the same part number as the last of the 1st generation?

What is the part number for the 2002 transmission?

Good collections Sultan:)

I think the 2k3 is 3.13 and the 2k2 was 2.93 or something.I think (with your permission) chris can just copy/paste it into his file he si building.

The end result can be a large FAQ posted here on top or on homepage with credit to all contributors for their sections.

i guess the 97 had the RE4R03A also. 02 might be RE5R01A, the five means five speed auto, right? i read a 99 has the RE5, but i don't think that's right. 3.133 is 03 not 02.

90-96 diff is 3.538 that rounds to 3.54 not 3.55.You included 3 decimal places for transmission gears why round to 2 places for the diff. The 97 and above diff is a different case model! The JRE507E transmission gear set is 3.540, 2.264, 1.471, 1.000, 0.834

Dont the 94-96 engines only produce 266 HP? I thought it was a different engine.

Curious

So why cant you use a 94 TCU in a 90? Is the transmission different? What are the differences between the 90-93Qs other than the armrest, the first gear start, and the grill? If there are few differences, isn't the 96 model the Q to have?

The 94+ had different gear ratios, so the TCU is set up differently - the shift points would be way off (shift out of first at 5000 RPM under light excelleration, etc.)

The 96 lost the variable valve timing due to new emissions requirements. 94+ lost a lot of the stiffness in the suspension to make it ride softer, gained some weight with thicker glass to reduce wind noise, and had a lot of rolling changes that made it less desirable from a speed/performance standpoint, but much more desirable for luxury and reliability.

I never have quite understood why the 1996 lost the variable intake camshaft feature since it had OBDII and adjusted fuel and air intake ratios on the fly. Anybody know? Were they just lazy and didn't reprofile the camshaft?

I'm not sure... maybe they didn't want to do the R&D for a model they were replacing in only one year? It would be interesting to know what the current Nissan President setup is like. Bet it never lost the VVT.

The 96 Q engine had a different set of camshafts, essentially spilt ing the duration from 248 down to 238........OBD2 doen't like much valve overlap [the older VVT had up to 28 degrees from 1200-4600 rpm] so they settled on 15 degrees for the new 96 units. OBD2 doesn't like an exhaust cam that stays open past TDC the 90-95 stayed open till 8 Deg ATDC vs 96 which closed at TDC!

It was amazing that they were able [?] to meet emissions in 1994 without a cam change just redesigned heads and runners and injectors!

Japan emission are easier because the fuel quality is better instead of the junk they call gasoline in US........low sulfur requirement.

The 2002 Q45 has the shorter rear end ~2.8xx. The 3.13 was only for the 2003 M45 and Q45.

Oops, I already said that. Maybe it'll get corrected now.

EDIT: 2002 differential ratio still not correct.
