Call me a dork but I've really have come to appreciate the 1st Gen door handles. I didn't really notice the handles much until I started until my everyday ride became a 92 400e MBZ. The Q is now my wifes/daughters car. But every time I climb into the Q I think "nice door handles"-

Ya know...I've always thought the same thing. My friend keeps suggesting that I shave all the door handles and do the door popper thing...and I keep telling him hell no. You just don't see chrome oval door handles anywhere anymore.

Shaved door handles is so.... 1990 Mini-truckin'.

Probably the best designed handles out there... and one of my favorite parts of the car (second only to the upper rear fenders).

One thing I've found from time to time is that these handles will build up some crud on the top edge of the moving part of the handle, causing it to bind a little. I tried greasing everything else to no avail. Finally cleaned this stuff off and no problem - very smooth!

I thought mine were frosted for the first few months of owner ship. Not the handle itself but the section that the actual handle sits in. Once while detailing I noticed a little shiny scratch, broke out the chrome cleaner and that "frost" came off. I have a vanity mirror on each door now. You can see yourself in the handle when you walk towards your car (it makes you look short and squatty though).

No WAY! I was wondering about that... So the inset part beneath the handle isn't supposed to be matte grey?

I'm taking the rest of the day off to polish those badboys!

They're supposed to be matte, but the chrome is behind there if you polish the paint off...

Hate to admit this but I never noticed the matte finish until you guys mentioned it! Mine is still in good shape. I like the difference in surfaces. Those handles really give the car some "tactile presence" - so lacking in other vehicles.
