The pins are actually slide pins and the boots are important. They seal in the lubricant for the pins. Without the boot, the caliper won't grip and release properly resulting in brake wear and overheating.... probably why your rotors warped in the first place.qship96 wrote:Went to get front rotors machined today to cure slight warping and decided to have new factory pads put on since it has been 55,678 miles since they were last changed-old pads still had 5 MM left on them all around and wore evenly-considering new pads start at 9.5mm,these would have lasted 93,000 miles-unbelievable! I noticed the small pin boot was missing when the tech removed the wheel-how urgent is it to have this replaced? do they sell this separatly?
94 was supposedly the last MY to have the sensors. My 94 had them, neither 95 does . I like them.3Q Jay wrote:question for you: does your 96 have the pad wear sensor? my black 95 (11/94 build) does not---now of course that could be from some hack's attempt to disable the message indicator, but the strange thing is that the whole harness is missing, not just the sensor. wondering if this is the original condition.....
Yeah! What Drew said. That back caliper won't last long without proper lubrication and then you'll have problems with your rotors in just a few 1000 miles. Common problem. I can't believe it wasn't there. Probably fell off when the tech turned his head or something.DrewQ45 wrote:The pins are actually slide pins and the boots are important. Early 1995 were meant to have them, but never verified by me. Both of mine are mid and late production run.qship96 wrote:..electric (electronic) wear system dropped in 95{ double check with Brian}-
hmmmm, so i take it you don't have the electric sensors then?maxnix wrote:Early 1995 were meant to have them, but never verified by me. Both of mine are mid and late production run.
No, and no llamp in the dash daignostics.3Q Jay wrote:hmmmm, so i take it you don't have the electric sensors then?
You also want to get caliper grease and grease the slide pins each time a brake job is done. They come in clear packets similar in size to ketchup but with green or red gease inside.qship96 wrote:Followup=I replaced all 4 front pin boots today, the bottom long boots in the caliper looked fine until I pulled them from caliper, found them deteriorated and chewed up upon removal, and the top short one that was still there was ok=moral of story is get the 8 dollar pinboot kit before you redo your brakes and change them, even if they look ok externally
The part number listed is for 94 and 95-96 Q45's. I need them for a 92 model year...Are the 94's the same or do you have a different part number for 1992?3Q Jay wrote:qship- if you've never done the caliper rebuild in your 200k, then of course you already know we're going to recommend that you do. p/n of the kit is 41120-64u25, and yes IoS does stock them.
now, if you only want those boots, the p/n is 41131-64u00 (pin-boot). in principle you should be able to get just those--but it might actually take longer.
