I dropped cylinder 3 in my sr20det a few months back, I have some cash saved up to rebuild or buy another, I found a deal I'm thinking about buying, only prob is the motor was imported from and running car, and upon a compression test, there low compression in cylinder 4. this is a quote from the seller of the description, "the compression numbers were as followed when we tested 161-159-162-76, normally when this is like this it is due to a collapsed ring which normally will pop when it gets warm on intital start up." the motor came straight from japan, but I have never heard of a collapsed ring, "poping" back into place upon start up. the motor is complete including new style ribbed head, Turbocharger, Alternator, Power Steering, AC Compressor, all Sensors attached to the engine ,Intake and exhaust manifolds. all for a price of $750 to my door.

so my questions are, 1 if I were to buy this, is it possible that this ring could "pop" if i were to drop this motor in and start it up?2: even if the ring is subsequently dead upon start-up, is the cost a worth while purchase? versus me tearing my motor down and buying a rebuild kit and possibly having to have my block machined. p.s. i do like the idea of this motor, also because I don't not have power steering and would like to have it. and not that A/C matters, but I have everything I would need to hook it back up. sorry for so many factors to consider in. The main thing is, is it possible for a ring to "pop" back up start up? if you can answer any other parts its appreciated!

I also have access to all the tools I need in my own garage, including engine hoist and stand. and have replaced rings on one of my KA's.

Either swap a good compression engine into your car or rebuild.

I can't see how that makes sense. A "popping" ring. Sounds like a lame excuse. I would go with rebuild.

I know I never heard of it myself, so I thought I'd bring it to the online forum. It is not necessarily a "popping" ring, but believed to be a collapsed ring. and they are saying there's a chance of it going back to normal ("popping") upon and start-up.

They'll say anything to make something bad sound fine on ebay. The compression numbers say it all.

happens everywhere really. not just ebay. but yea lookin like a rebuild is in sight. unless someone has a complete block from head gasket to oil pan they want to sell me for a reasonable price. so i can take my time and rebuild that block for more power.

I'll have to check on that when I get back from vacation next week. Try to find out how much a block weighs cuz I don't have a scale.
