Does anyone know the temperature tolerances of PVC pipe? Basically, I want to know if putting PVC in part of the intake system will melt it.

Well, PVC is toxic...It will melt, but it really depends on where you're putting the PVC... I wouldn't get too close to the block or headers. It's a thermoplastic so it's gonna get soft when heated and firm up when it cools again, so if it's gonna heat and cool a lot (i.e. in a engine) it won't last too long... you might want to try PP, I don't know. That's what they use for other autoparts...

Well, I mean the stock intake tube is made of some kind of plastic, so I imagine plastic will have a chance of holding up.

Not all plastic is the same. I'm pretty sure the stock is made from either ABS or PP. I know it's not PVC.

Grab a piece of PVC, put it next to your engine, and rev it for a minute or two...if it doesn't deform at all, then you might try it... just don't breath near it...

I don't know, bud. I don't have to take any material science engineering classes for another 6 months.

well, can you buy ABS or PP at a regular hardware store? I'm not really dead set on PVC.

Doubtable... at least at most hardware stores...

dont do it up ghetto, do it right, buy an intake or have one made, don't do the pvc shyte. It just really looks rediculous when you pop your hood and there's some pvc pipe in there. I did that **** once and then I look back on it and realized how freakin' dumb it was. Yeah, the pvp pipe will heat up and sometimes let off these toxic fumes, so if you decide to do it, remember that. OH and if you're going to do a ghetto intake, use ABS pipe. You can get it at your local hardware store.

I have ABS pipe actually, which doesn't have a plasticizer so it shouldn't get mushy when it heats up, and it also has a far higher heat tolerance apparently (rated at 80C, plenty for an intake). And I don't really give two ****s about what it looks like.

If you did care what it looked like you could aways sand it and paint it with some high temperature black paint.

Another option is taking it to a muffler shop and having them mandrel bend or cut the piece you need.

you can use the heat resistance cover to protect it .. I seen people build a whole cold air intake out of it ..

I'm pretty sure the ABS will be fine. 80C is like 175F. I don't think the outermost part of the intake manifold will get that hot, especially when it's something as unconductive as plastic.

hey man, why don't you just buy a cheap ebay intake kit for like 10 to 20 bux, and they look good. IMO. yea, having pvc pips, is wat ricers do and painted and they think they made 100 hp out of that, just save some money, and get like a INJEN intake or some other kind. don't be so gehtto.

heres one http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors...wItem

Hey, good job not reading the thread. I'm making a completely different intake manifold. An intake pipe is not the same thing. Try reading the thread before you go throwing stupid insults around, thanks.

u dont think that abs and gas might have any bad side effects? if it was me building the manifold then i would use metal, and avoid plastics all together. especially if you plan on boosting it ever.

on most pvc pipe it has a max heat temp. written on it, and also a freezing temp. on it
