Hi im mike and im from texas. and down here we put 20's on our rides or bigger. I seen a j 30 with 20's on it and i dont know how they di it. The biggest the cars wheel wells will except are 19's. Thats cuttin it close to rubbin the struts in front. I have 18 inch helos on mine, but i want 20's. What need to be done to the car? And how would any mods effect the vehicles safety, handlin, and struts?

Mike:

The bigger the wheels the heavier they are:

Every pound of weight on a wheel is like adding 4 pounds elsewhere on the car (rotating weight). So you will brake slower and your performance will suffer.

- Also the larger a wheel the harder it is ti manufacture it round and strong, there for unless you spedn a <lopt . On a wheel that size (say over 300) you are unlikely to get a wheel that matches the factroy wheel in strenght and trueness.

I know the curent fashion is for huge wheels, but even witrh my large 4000 lb Q45 I dont go over 17 inch.

Thats teh maximum size and still be functional for most vehicles.

ANd 17 inch can look good too.

Especially when huge wheels often make yourt brakes look small.

just my 2 cents,,

Fred....:)

You would need alot of things like spacers, camber kit, etc....I don't think anyone here has 20's.Most of us have good taste :D

jk, jk... Welcome to the site.

there are one or two J30's with 20's i believe. there are no camber kits or special items made for the J30 to accomodate special needs. everything has to be custom made :Djust from looking at a J with stock suspension though i think the wheel well can handle 20's...mine has 17's and they're plenty big for me. just need to go a size in tire width next time and i'll be completely satisfied.

your car represents you so do what you will with it and make it what you like! if you need help tracking down places to fabricate custom suspension components shoot either me or DiamondJ30 an email and we'll help ya out.

the bigger wheels will be without a doubt harder to stop with the increased rolling momentum.

diamond, i've got the same size all the way around on the 17x8's. tirerack recommended too small of a tire for the wheel. (there's a thread around here somewhere where i talk about that) but anyway it's 225's i believe. next tire purchase will be at 235 or 245. 235's had a higher load rating so i may have to stick with that. Larger in the rear would be nice, but then i would lose rotating abilities and the tires cost to much to lose some life span on them

Wheel wells on the J are just as big as the Q and J30 handles 20's with no prob, no mods and struts are fine. But yes you are right...TECHNICALLY the J is only supposed to go up to 19" because of the stock size 215/60/15 but it can exceed that easily with good clearance and no rubbing. Only problem is with the braking...takes longer to stop a heavier wheel vs stock wheel and you have to be very careful and know your braking distance. Overall, handling is great with 20's and ride is not as harsh as everyone thinks. There is no difference in 18 inch vs 20 inch in ride quality. Also It's a personal preference to go with bigger wheels and personally i think it looks damn good on the J (with the right wheel).

Old pic of my 20's

I hope the driver's life also is not.

Hey, what's up dawgs. Olu from NYC is back from a long hiatus. Work keeps me away from this site too long. If you want to do 20's and got the money to maintain changing tires every 10-15,000 miles, do you. I've seen 18's on J's up here and they look hot enough. If you use 20's, do it because it's for personal taste and not trying to keep up with the other cats. I have a 94 Q wine colored Q and I;m going 18 against the better judgement on this board! If you look it up, heated discussions were had on this. Some people call these big rims "Bling, Bling" rims. Of course I had my 20 cents to say. Some cars just don't need 20's, 19's etc. Certain cars like Bimmers and Benzes have no problem but Japanese cars traditionally (older models) aren't all that great on ride. 18's and 20's definitely have a ride difference in this screwed up city. Cats stay with a flat or rim damage. You're lucky in good ole texas. Can't wait to move to Atl!

Man! One decent pot hole and those 21" wheels are history. The used car market will be full of rattley vehicles in the coming years. These oversize wheels have got to be hell on suspensions and coachwork. Maybe cars will have to be reclassified from "durable goods" to "semi-durable" if the fad continues.
