push the gas but the car barely goes?

I have a 1992 240sx fastback with a ka24de automatic engine. I just bought the car and want to swap it out with a sr20det but want it to pass inspection with the ka24de before i swap it. but when i start the car and put it in reverse it wont go back? so me and my friend pushed it back and wanted to see what would happen if i put it in drive. But i push the gas down and the car barely moves and ideas why this is?

Check the ATF.

the transmission fluid. do you think thats why the car doesnt want to go when i hit the gas?

An automatic needs transmission fluid to work. If your low it can cause overheating it wont want to move ect ect. I had a problem when my alternator belt broke at 5k and cut the transmission fluid lines that run to the bottom of the radiator. Needless to say it dumped all the fluid on GA 204 and made a mustang driver laugh as he passed me. The crappy part is i was pulling him too.

Ok im gonna check the ATF today and also give my engine a flush and new oil because when i hit the gas alot of smoke comes out the exhaust.
