Ok, so I left my lights on last night,,,yea yea I know. So today I got a jump, but stupid me didn't really dive her around a whole ton, so now my car won't crank. When I enter the car the light comes on, but it just barely turns over and won't go any further. So here is my question:

I live on a hill. This morning I tried to push start her. I pushed her the other way and down my hill. I tried in 1st, 2nd and 3rd, I had the car key set to on. I let her gather some speed while the car was in gear. I popped the clutch and the car started. I could hear the engine running, but no RPM's were registering. Once I took it out of gear the car died.

What was I doing wrong?

What does a push start have to do with this?

Check your fuses then come back.

The key was in the on-position and you're sure that the car was running when you let out the clutch? Could you rev it up at all or accelerate?

If your car just died even after you did what you said, your alternator may be dead along with your battery. Other than that, beats me.

I got it. The car was completely dead before. Since this time I had a little juice left, she push started right away. I just took her for a 20 min highway rip. Hopefully that will leave me with more juice.

So I found out that if the battery is completely drained, (say from leaving your lights on all night) you cannot push start.

Thanks for the input Matt!

Also when I tried previously, the car was running, but when I moved the throttle it wouldn't rev. I guess it didn;t have enough juice? I live on a mountain so when I exit my street I have about a good minute or 2 of coasting downhill.

Its actually a brand new battery (2 months old)

It was below freezing last night, when the battery completely drained. I have heard that this can ruin batteries, I hope this isn't the case with mine.

If it is, I guess I can get it replaced under warranty.

if the battery is stone dead there is not enough power to work the injectors, ignition, ecu, ect ect ect. and it wont make power bc the altinator actually uses power to make power

They make a device called a battery charger. You use this so called device to charge a battery. An alternator is NOT a battery charger. The alternator is only meant to MAINTAIN a battery not charge it.

^ yes, but, given enough time driving the car, it will be fine. TECNICALLY you should take the battery out and charge it and leave it on a battery tender for a little bit but if the battery was only drained for a short period of time, expecially a new battery, it should be fine. but since it was cold, and bad luck is a common denominator with 240's you may need to replace it

A battery is 12.6v at 100% state of charge.Run your battery down to maybe 12.2 then drive around.I can guarantee that it not be back to 12.6v whenever you check it.Plus you are putting a major load on the alternator.

i never said its gonna charge it back to full. i was simply saying it will start again if he drives it for a while. if the battery was completely dead, yes it will continue to lose charge and refuse to start the car. but if he drove it for a while, and now it starts, its fine for the time being until he decides to buy a new battery in case this one s***s out.

this has happened to me MANY times with other vehicles. my s***box lumina for instance, had a short somewhere and it drained the batter everytime it sat for a few hours. but i fixed it, drove it. and its fine. this was over 6 months ago and i have never had a problem with the battery to date.

this was the same situation with my old truck, the gtp i used to have, and a slew of other vehicles due to negligence and leaving dome lights on and what not. just because a battery gets drained, doesnt mean it wont hold a charge in most cases.

not to discredit you, because you are right, and i know that its not going to fully charge his battery back up to his original potential without being on a proper charger, but odds are its going to be fine. unless of course the battery was completely dead from the lights and the cold. in which case it wont hold a charge anymore and he needs a new one.

hope that clarifies my previous post.
