this is my first post on here. I know this topic has been gone over several times but there was some confusing pieces of info i found.

A friend of mine would like to put a push button start in his 1989 240sx. The key will still be used to turn acc and run to on.Anyways here is the info I found.

"you put your ignition to ON which would energize the relay but would not do anything because it is not grounded. when you press the switch you provide ground for the relay which would allow the voltage to pass from the ignition on to the starter which would turn your car on.""black/white is ignition on and black/yellow is the starter wire"

here is the pic i found as well

are those wire color descriptions accurate? they seemed reverse of what the fsm says.

aslo im assuming he ment SPLICE into what ever power wire is used, not cut it?

some clarification would be nice, thanks!

edit: and you actually have quite a few wires on your ignition switch...not just on acc and start

you just have to understand what a relay is. it needs ground and 12v positive to close the switch in the relay. you also need 12v positive at the beginning of the relay switch so that when the switch closes the 12v positive goes to starter.

You also need to send 12v positve to a fuse that supplies power to the ecu when starting. so, two things must happen when you turn key to start. power to computer and power to starter. you can start without sending power to computer but it is much harder

you obviously also need the accessories and "on"

see tutorials in my signature and look up starter trouble shooting.

starter button equals stupid idea, btw

Your sketch is correct.. just don't cut the ON wire, splice into it.

The easiest way I can think of is just splicing a wire into the start wire, and wire 12 volts to the switch. Normally when you go to the start position it cuts everything else to help the starter along but as long as your not running a lot of stuff it'd still be fine.

My cylinder lock went bad on my 97 so I wired a start button using two 30/40amp SPDT relays to cut power to the Acc. and AC and send power to the starter and S/Signal when the button is pressed. Works great, just like the starter switch.

I'm pretty sure that while the engine is cranking (Start possition) power is cut to the ACC wire, but the ON wire remains energized. So getting the power from it should be fine..

that seems to be what the wiring diagram suggests as there is no dot for access wire when car is starting.
