I've always liked the simplicity of a bush button start. Unfortunately, most new cars require a chipped key - which is why people install these starters still have to put the key in the ignition before they push the button. There's a fine line between genius and stupidity and this definately crosses it and defeats the purpose of the push button start.

Has anyone installed a push button starter that doesn't require a key? I'd like to put a button where the ignition is on the steering column and do away with the whole starter if possible. (That, or go the Mercedes way and buy a gear shifter with a Start button on the top.)

This is what Mercedes have:

I did this on my old 510, but the steering wheel did not lock when you pulled the key. I actually set it up on a series of toggle switches much like a race car, with the final switch being a "rocker"type that engaged and returned when released. I also put a kill switch under the dash for those who thought it would be easy to just get in and drive off...--Mike

I'd definately put some kind of a hidden kill switch somewhere. That or even hide the start button - stick it in the ash tray maybe
