what are these for? i never knew, but people tend to automatically assume that if a coilover has helper springs it is superior, which i doubt.

As far as I know it's a lower spring rate spring intended to smooth out the ride a little by soaking up the smaller "high-frequency" bumps.

Yes, they're a "comfort" item. For those interested, I do believe that all of the TEIN kits can be retrofitted with them by replacing the existing coil with the shorter coil and helper spring, available from TEIN.

They keep the springs seated when you jump your car or rally it. Coilovers w/o helper springs will clunk when seating the spring back in place after the car has been jacked up or jumped.

That's bad info. Check with each company about their policy on springs sold to the general public. Each company will have a disclaimer about void of warranty if used for competition and/or abuse and/or jumping. Seriously.

The helper spring isn't meant as a stop-gap for jumping duty, or rally use. You won't find helper springs on WRC cars. If you do, post up some proof.

P.S. yes, Tien makes coilovers...Eibach makes springs for competition, so does Ohlins, so do a host of other models.. that doesn't mean the kit you buy is meant to be jumped..

If your springs are short enough to become unseated when suspension is at full travel, you can upgrade to a longer spring with similar rate, which will cost more, but be better suited for real world use. Proper applications and uses means you won't have this problem. Hence, the helper spring.
