purpose of 5th pos switch and neutral pos switch?

ok so i have the fsm in front of me and i've searched through and through, but i can't find a single statement saying what the 5th pos switch is for, also called o/d switch. the only thing that i can think is that it has to do with cruise, kinda like cruise will only work in fifth gear? but if i'm correct it will work in fourth also (maybe wrong) if so that cancels out my theory of only 5th working cruise! and the neutral switch??? does it control starting? cause i always thought that the clutch switch was the inhibitor for starting the veh? lil confused on these two switches, and what their functions actually are! if anyone could enlighten me on this subject i would greatly appreciate it! p.s. my car is a 96' 240 se model 5spd non abs!

I know for a fact in a real manual 240, when your in neutral and you put the car in gear, any gear, while your stopped the rpms change. Also does the same when pulling it out of gear into neutral.

I think it has something to do with fuel maps...? for idling and for when the car is being put into gear to drive off.

ahhh i see it's possibly used for calculating load? bumps fuel when in gear! good info anything else??

The neutral switch is used by the ecm to make fuel cut (during decell)does not happen unless the trans is in gear.Keeps the engine from dying.
