Today I saw a BMW 740il with HIDs that were practically purple and I thought it looked awesome. I know nothing of how HIDs work, but do know that the hotter the bulb gets (or the higher the kelvin level) the more purple the light looks.

Could I just buy a set of HID bulbs with a higher Kelvin to make my lights purple, too? Or would I have to replace all the HID converters and whatnot?

you just need to find a d2r or d2s (whichever bulb you have) in 12 or 15K. that's all you need. you will lose some visibility at night and it might make your eyes strain a little.

How do I know which bulbs I have? (And would you happen to know how much they'd cost for the higher powered bulbs?)

Thanks!Zach

If you do a lot of night driving I definitely wouldn't recommend bulbs like that. As said above, light output is less and that color strains your eyes more. If I remember right the I35 has separate halogen high beams, which might help, but I still wouldn't recommend it myself.

Stock is around 4,300k I believe and going by Sylvania's site, your car has D2R's. As far as where to get them, I'm not sure on that as I've not messed with HID's yet.

Could I just buy the bulbs from somewhere or do I need a whole new kit to run a higher powered HID?

all you have to do is buy the bulbs. the color diff is in the xenon gas, not the ballast.

I have a 2002 I35 too. And your lights are 4300k D2R. If you want purple color, here you go. Here's a link to a ebay auction. http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors...ZWDVW

Halogen lights put out about 900 lumens of useable light on the road. 4300K puts out over 3400 lumens. 5000k puts out about 3100, 6000k puts out about 2900. Just imagine how much less useable light you'll get with a 10000k+ kit.

I got a set of 6000k digital slim Prolumens (tint of blue, 2900 lumens) and it's the best of both worlds. You get what you pay for, and I got a lifetime warranty for under $300.

HID lighting is more than looks, its about lighting.

This is an older post. I've had time to research and figure that out. Thanks, though! I appreciate it!
