I saw a brand new navy blue Shelby Mustang last night with purple HIDs and made me a little excited. It was such a sexy car.

Anyone know what type of bulbs I need for my I35? (I'd guess D2Rs but Im not sure) and what degree kelvin are purple lights? 15000 degrees?

Are you sure it wasn't just purple film on the head lights with regular HID's??

they are at least above 12k. A friend of mine has 12k's and they look between blue and violet. I'll warn ya though . I hope you don't expect to see anything at night with those things. the light output bites hard at that high of a temp. Good luck though

Yea, the higher the degrees kelvin, the hotter it burns. Kelvins have nothing to do with light output. But you've got to admit that they look pretty damn cool. I've got 20/10 vision, so I shouldn't have a problem with visibility if I get the violet HIDs. If I do, I can always cut my losses and switch back to the stock bulbs.

The higher the degree of kelvin the less the output of light. It's a fact that even HID sellers are quick to admit. The best balance between the two is either 5300 or 6000. After that you trade the light output for the color. The wonderful thing about that is that cops have a higher tendency to be looking your way if you have purple lights (and it's not legal in some areas, if not all)

There is a chart to show you the relationship between color and degree kelvin (small writing thoug). Even though it only shows blue at 16k, notice the pic of the 12k, definately violet. But notice below the chart

The lower the K value, the higher the brightness level.

man, i will be flat out honest with you, if you plan on doing this mod, only do so for show. i used to have 8ks and now i have 4500 (close to your stock) and i will never put anything else in except for show. the higher kelvin bulbs can put a strain on your eyes and ultimately affect your driving. just my thoughts on it.

I just upgraded to 8000K's and the output is noticeably less than stock. It's fine with me, I love the look and the yellow fogs help out as well...

That's kind of what I was thinking. I've got PIAA yellow fogs waiting to be installed.

BMW's don't have purple, all OEM HID's are 4300k. BMW just color mod's their projectors.

Would you happen to know what makes the stock HID purple? I'd be more apt to do that if it means keeping the headlights nice and bright. Although I want purple headlights, it's bassackwards to trade stock bulbs for dimmer bulbs.

Its the projector itself that makes the color. http://www.hidplanet.com/forums go there and you can look at all things hid.

Even if you do manage to change the color to purple, you'll probably lose at least SOME brightness. The only other way I could think of is tinting the housing.

Yeah it was raining to day and the yellow fogs helped alot, the 8K's get washed out in the rain for sure. I do have dual sets of yellow fogs as well so it helps even more!
