Greetings,

I am not sure if this truly applies to this thread, but I would like to hear the answer to this from a Nissan mechanic. After a couple of summers of Internships and saving, I believe I have accumulated the money for a 91-93 240SX with a target mileage of about 100k to 150k. I am going to start looking for one this Monday if all things go right.

I would like to know what I should look for on a used 240SX. To make my query more specific, I mean items above and beyond the normal things you would look and ask for on a used car; I already know to look for rust, frame damage, suspension problems, obvious oil leaks, worn belts, malfunctioning headlights, and anything else that might indicate poor maintenance. The information I seek is about problems specific to this car I should look out for like the MAFS and I have heard of a problem with plastic timing chain guides on the KA24DE. Are there any other issues I am missing?

tension rods blown out. Fluid usually leaks from the bad ones. take a look at the 4 corners of the vehicle from underneath, look for squished unibody ends[look like frame rails]. This would indicate a substantial impact to either end of the car. Dont for get to ask if the title is clean. Make sure the windows work and the dash components all work. Be sure to check the drivability of the car by starting it from dead cold and let it warm up to operating temp and drive it. try both light accel and hard accel to be sure there are no glitches in the throttle response. be sure to get it through all the gears, get to steady freeway cruise speeds looking for tire shake, when at the steady freeway speed lightly apply the brakes and make sure they dont shimmy. and check the cruise if equipped and most importantly make sure it will pass a smog inspection. In california the seller is responsable for the smog check.
