Hello,I just purchased a 1990 R32 GTR completely spontaneously. I made the trip up to Toronto (4 hour drive) to look at a 1JZ Supra. The supra was a dissapointment but I noticed they had a Skyline in the back. I asked them to start it up and drove it up and down the laneway a couple of times, everything checked out good and I'm going to be picking it up next week. Are there any trouble spots I should worry about on the 4 hour drive home? What do I tell my insurance company?

OMG, my dream car. I wish I could go to a lot here in SoCal and find an R32. Hope you don't have any problems bringing it back home.

I'm buying it from a japanese auto parts importer, they had it stashed away at the back of their warehouse. I have tried to research the reliability of these vehicles without much luck.

A little late to do your research guy I am impulsive too so I will get off my soapbox now The R32 is an old car, check for rust. Along the trunk floor, at the base corners of the rear window, under the door mirrors, in the kick panels etc are known troublespots. The R32 had the old model crank with the short drive collar. They spit oil pumps off when abused. Assume it has been and watch the oil pressure on the trip home and don't rail on it until you can fix the fault. (search the forum "crank collar")Other than that any standard old car advice applies. Good luck, I hope it goes well for you.

Most 32's have been beat to $h*t in Japan (or other asian countries), it was and still is a very sought after car to purchase, I would first start of with basic-intermediate overhaul to the engine. Change the timingbelt, oil, sparkplugs, clean the fuel injectors, change the fuel filter, fuel pump filter as well. Then look for any signs of fatigue on the turbo and exhaust gasket components. Its not to bad of work to save your motor and car. Trust me, 8 out of 10 of my cousins that own GTR32's (not gts etc models) beat on their car any chance they get. Congrats to being a skyline owner!

What to expect?

A ton of unexpected, little nickle-N-dime stuff....

I drove mine 30+ hours to get it home, and had no problems at all.But then, 2 months later:transmission brokeThen radiator brokeThen noticed front brake rotors cracked (though, those weren't OEM, but el-cheapo cross-drilled ones)Also noticed it had the wrong spark plugs in...again, not a generally expected issue, but the point is; it's a 15 or so year old car, and you'll be at LEAST the third owner.

I've put over $1,000 in REPAIRS in the 3 months I've had my R32, and that's counting the fact that I lucked up in the most intense way when I was able to get an entire replacement transmission for only $150.

Expect a PITA car that'll always be worth the hassle and effort, cuz every time you stop for gas or anything at all, someone will inevitabely go "Whoa!" even if they don't have a clue what it is.:D

Well, like I said....what to expect is what you'd expect from ANY well-used 15+ year old car:

lots of maintenance, upkeep and being ready for things to break at any time.

But god help me, it's just SOOOOO worth it....
