help:

just getting into timing chain removal. any tips on pulling crank pulley.

does it just pull off with a gear puller?

any thing to replace like a key ?

how do you keep engine from turning ( best way) and get off nut?

if you need a puller to get it off how does it go back on ? do you have to pound it back on with block of wood?

thanks in advance

A 2 or 3-jaw puller will be fine if it's big enough.http://www.nicoclub.com/forums...26820

Hey man, just did mine and here's the easyest way I found to do it.

1. Put the car in gear, I chose reverse.2. Yank parking break up as far as you can.3. Have someone stand on the brake pedal.4. Have a nice sized peie of pipe to put around the wratchet handle for more leverage. I used a peice of PVC about 3 to 4 feet long. 5. The pully might move a little bit. But if you jerk on the ratchet real fast, instead of just turning it. It should loosen the bolt no prob.

Now as far as actyally getting the pully off. Everyoen told me to get a puller. But I just put a pry bar behind it and gave it a few tugs, came out a good inch or so. Theh I hammered it back on all the way. Then gave it two or three good tugs with a pry bar, and it came right off. These may not of been the best of methods, but they worked for me. O yeah, mine was done in a 5 speed, so that probably makes a diffrence.Ryan

I had to do this trick to replace my front main oil seal a few months ago.. Get a long *** breaker bar. Put the ratchet on the pulley nut, and ratchet it up so the breaker bar is resting against the frame of the car on the passenger side.

Now crank the engine just for a second, long enough to turn the engine over but you DON'T want the engine to start! I pulled my fuel pump fuse just to make sure that the engine wouldn't start up. The force of the engine turning over will be just enough to pop the nut loose, and then you can have someone stand on the brakes with the car in gear to loosen the nut the rest of the way. It might take you a few tries, I did this about 4 times before the nut gave.

I didn't have to use a puller at all to get the pulley off either, just had one person holding the pulley from underneath the car and one person up top, and wiggle it, it'll eventually slide off.

Similarly detailed in the link I posted above. The important thing is that you need to have a method of getting the bolt back on to the same amount of torque. The starter only turns one way, and even if you reversed the polarity, there's no way to tell what the final installation torque is.
