iv decided, after having my turbo setup on for 3 weeks, that im just going to pull the motor and do a complete overhaul. it has 183k on it and low compression numbers. id like to do it in a weekend, start to finish. i ordered a complete reman. head. the engine kit has everthing i need including forged pistons and connecting rods. is there anything i need to consider that i may have over looked? is it going to be easier to pull the motor, or the motor and transmission together. i can imagine a few of you have probably done this quite a few times. thanx for any info you can provide.

Good luck on pulling and rebuilding a motor in a weekend. You shouldn't rush the rebuild part of it, that is for sure. Last time I pulled a motor with an engine hoist, it came out super easy when I took off the transmission first. It doesn't take that much more time, and simplifies things greatly.

deffinately make sure not to get in a hurry when i pulled my motor for the first time theres alotta stuff i wish i could have done. For me I'd say the bigest thing was organization you might wanna put tape on all your clips and label them all and put all screws and stuff in bags and label them or if you can put them back in the screw holes, also take lots of pics as your doing it so know how things are and to post up if you have ?s and for the that just my .02

Your motor will take FOREVER to break in if it ever does! you need at least 600 to 400 grit hone on the walls so rings will seat--But that is just the tip of the iceberg. Are you going to measure everything? You have to allow time for the machine shop! IF I had everything all cleaned, measured, painted and CLEANED it would still take at least a whole day just for assembly!.

It is definetley easier to pull and put the engine in without transmission, when putting it back in i found it easier to put the engine in with only the intake side motor mount connected to the block, then once the engine is in the transmission then bolt up the exhaust side MM, IMO. And make sure you label all yournuts and bolts in some ziplock bags.

the only thing im taking to the mach. shop is the crank. everything else is new. ill ream the tops of the cylinders myself. if it needs it. one of my main concerns is any scoring on the piston walls. i would hate to have the block done too.
