Has anyone been pulled over yet with a cold air intake?

If the cop asks you to pop the hood, could you get a ticket for the intake? My Fujita intake doesn't have a sticker stating that it is 50 state legal

ive been pulled over like 6 times and they have never asked me to pop the hood. i don't think they would expect anything to be under the hood of a versa.... except for bob actually because of his CF hood, they had to pop his hood and apparently they pulled out a booklet and they tried to find something illegal but he passed.

The chances of you being asked to pop your hood in a Versa are slim to none. Our cars are econoboxes that aren't known to be modded much under the hood.

You'll definitely increase your chances if you mod the exterior in a flashy way that just begs for the cops to search your car. But if you keep your car fairly low-key you should be fine.

I have a CAI and I haven't been pulled over. Granted I've only had it on for a week

Oh. Well, I have a loud muffler on my V and I've almost got pulled over, but the cop saw some other guy speeding, and caught him instead. Haha

So... let's say I do get pulled over. What's the worst that can happen?

Fix-it ticket. They want you to take out the intake and put the factory one back in by a certain date. Then you go to court on that day and show a court appointed clerk that you've done what they asked. THEN, they sign you off, you pay a fine, and you're on your way back home to install your intake again.

The only reason someone gets a fix-it ticket is if they're breaking an ordanance or some law governing a vehicle. If the minimum height for a vehicle is....say 2 inches off the ground. A cop will pull you over, measure the distance, and if it's under the 2 in.(let's say 1.5 in) you'll get a fix it ticket. So if the cop pulls you over, and says your exhaust exceeds a certain noise ordanance or requirement using a decible meter, you'll get a fix it ticket.

The only thing I see wrong with a CAI, and I dont get why its such a thing on a V(doesnt really do anything, maybe 2 or 3 hp, nothing noticable) but thats another story, is Warranty issues. If Nissan can prove that the CAI or exhaust or any of the "mods" you do caused a failure in a warrantied item you're warranty wont cover it. Lets say your engine goes kablooey within warranty. If Nissan can prove the CAI is what caused it then you pay for all repairs out of pocket.

Thats why I never modify a warrantied vehicle, at least until the warranty runs out.

It really depends. I just moved to Maryland from L.A. and I used to drive a very low Integra with an exhaust, intake, and nice rims. Pretty much an attention grabber, especially for cops.

I was pulled over twice while I was there, the first time the cop said my exhaust was illegal (in CA any modification to the exhaust is illegal, no matter how quiet it is) and my car was too low. He said I needed to fix both of those things and gave me a fix-it ticket. I raised my car, changed the exhaust, and set up an appointment with a state referee. The ref measured the height of my car and the sound of my new exhaust. It met standards so he gave me a paper and I took it to court and paid the fee. The second time was for my exhaust again, he said it was too loud and I needed to get it fixed. I showed him the paperwork saying it was legal and he still said I needed to change it. It was total BS but whatever, cops can use their discretion and do whatever they want. I went through the same process again.

Now both times the cops didn't ask me to pop my hood, if they did I would have had to change my intake. The worst thing that could happen is a cop pulls you over and asks you to pop your hood. He gets you for your exhaust and intake. You would have to do the same things I did. It's a pain in the *** but worth it in the end

They need reasonable intent to do any search of a vehicle. That includes, interior, underhood or any other port of the car not easily visible to the human eye. Only other way is if they ask you and you say they can search the vehicle.

If the intake is legal, then what grounds do they have to tell you that you need to remove it? I could see it if you had a loud exhaust or something. They aren't even allowed to tell you that your not allowed to have NOS in the car, they can just get you if it's hooked up (atleast in DE it's like that). I highly highly doubt that a cop would ask me to take my intake off. There is no reason for it and I'm definatly not a threat to the road in my little V.

Since laws vary from state to state and province to province the only relevant comments in this thread are the ones that pertain to the state of the OP. For example in Canada cops can search your car for pretty much whatever reason they want (criminal law is federal). A car is not considered the same as a house or a person for search purposes. Motor vehicles are a provincial responsibility so what is legal on a car in one province may be illegal in another. The states are all locally regulated too. Just look a the varying tint laws. Blanket statements about legality are meaningless.

Doubly so since the OP is from CA, which is the ONLY state a basic intake mod would ever get you into trouble in. Not getting in trouble outside of California is pretty much implied; nowhere else cares.

The belief that you are driving a race ready vehicle on the streets is reasonable intent in CA. If the cops even smell a racer, and you've got some kind of oustide modification that may suggest so (exhaust, body kit, "racing crew" stickers, part stickers or any such combination) is enough for the 5-O to make a stop. Usually in my town, officers in patrol cars dont given a rats @$$ because they have better things to do....its the motorcycle cops you gotta watch out for. Sneaky bastards

Well you can always sell your Fujita intake and get an AEM intake. It is 50 state legal and has the sticker to prove it.

It has a sticker that says it's 50 state legal? According to AEM's website they are not approved for street use yet. Besides the Fujita is so much better looking! ; )
