So I scored myself a PSP for pretty much free. Got it from my neighbor who already has another one. This one does come with it's share of problems though.

-The UMD drive is jammed or something, I could probably take it apart and fix it but why bother, none of the PSP games really appeal to me right now.

-The analog stick is missing the button part, all thats there is the little peg the button sits on. Although I could probably find one at Best Buy or Gamestop and take the button part off. No accessories either, so im going to have to go out and buy a charger and Memory Stick.

I know that you can't put any custom firmware on PSP's with the newest Sony updates, or so iv'e been told. But this one has been sitting in a drawer for a while and is still rocking the 2.71 firmware.

Anyways, my question is which firmware is currently the best to load on this thing? All im really looking to do with it is use the browser and load up emulators or some PS1 games on it.

The best custom firmware is 3.40 oe-a

You might still have to downgrade to 1.5 before loading 3.40 oe-a though.

email me if you have any questions.

I have a guide to upgrade to the firmware.

3.40 oe-a even has PS1 playability.

I'm rocking my PSP with FFVII, FFIX, and Legend of Dragoon. it's pretty bad ***

I emailed you.

I don't know if this is illegal but if it is then mods delete post.

But if anyone wants a custom firmware then email me I can do it all! Even put backups of PS1 games on the PSP.

If thats illegal then:

If anyone wants me to "fix" their "broken" PSP email me

Being impatient and scrounging around for info, I settled on the M33 3.52 firmware. Now im happily going through Dino Crisis 2 and a bunch of SNES games. Fun times.

The OE-A's are the best. You don't have to do a whole bunch of crap to play ISOs or homebrew. You have it easy nowadays. I remember the old days where one had to actually run a bootloader for homebrew. Anyways you need to verify that you don't have a TA-082 or TA-086 board before doing anything. The downgrade is pretty easy and pretty much any PSP message board will have step by step instructions on how to do this. I play the Gran Turismo's on my PSP at work.

Yes playing PS1 games on psp is amazing

Modding a PSP is the only way it can be declared a 'decent' system.

Ha, thats true.

After seeing all the stuff that a modded PSP does, a couple of my friends dusted theirs off and asked me to mod theirs too. Problem was, they all had 3.52 firmware and I thought they were just SOL. Then I caught wind of the Pandoras Battery downgrader. An hour or two later and I converted 4 more PSP to the goodness of custom firmware. Then followed multiple games of MGS:PO.

I was seriously surprised that the SNES emulator had that Netplay option that let 2 PSP's play multiplayer games together. I was up playing Ninja Turtles 4 for a good while.Ahhh, fun.

So...this thread inspired me to dig out my LONG ignored PSP (which I abandoned after upgrading to 2.82 just after GTA:VCS came out and disappointed me).

But now I've reached another dead end: I don't own Lumines and there's no way in hell I'm paying more than $5 for a freaking puzzle game. What are my other alternatives?

Hmmm...looks like I sort of left out some key details... Apparently, Lumines is required to downgrade from 3.50 (which I upgraded to since there's the most community support for downgrading from it right now).

Is there another way, or am I going to have go buy a copy of it just to downgrade?

What are you trying to downgrade from? And are you using a TA-082 board?

no, and i figured it out (kinda). i upgraded again to 2.80 and then downgraded to 1.5, then installed m33 3.52 and now im attempting to go to 3.52-3 or -4 so i can eventually get to the latest version, 3.71. im hung up trying to update to 3.52 -4, it wont run the eboot.pbp for that specific version, says "game cannot be played."

im hearing mixed response on the newest m33 though, like it doesnt support all the homebrew stuff that i want to use.

any advice here?

I have 3.71 M33-4 running at the moment and it does absolutely everything 3.52 does and more, including running all homebrew.

When 3.71 M33 first came out there was no more 1.5 kernel support which is what a lot of homebrew was based on, but they came out with a patch for that so now it works like a charm.

This thread is amazing! I'm so excited about my PSP now! I don't hardly play any PSP games anymore but I want to get a bunch of old school SNES and PS1 games on it, :D. That site listed above is awesome! Anybody have any other helpful walkthrough type sites for first time PSP modders? I would love to get into this! Thanks,Fletch

Heres a question: can the newest PSP's be used with the custom firmwares? I had a PSP not long after it came out, and back then when they were just starting the whole homebrew thing it wouldnt work on the newest firmwares. I would basically be buying one again to play console games on the go, so this is a must.

yea you can put custom firmwares on the new psps. To my knowledge you can put CFW on ANY PSP using pandoras battery. but i would still get the fat one because theres less hassle getting homoebrew and stuff to work on it
