If many of you own the older two generations (ie. not the slim) then you probably are experiencing the same error as me. I get on the PS3 and noticed my date was 12.31.1999(OMG Y2K). And some of my save files, trophies, and music have disappeared. And much to my discontent what ever i tried didn't seem to help me sign on. Did a connection test, tried signing on over and over again but to no avail. More can be read on the article i will link http://ps3.ign.com/articles/107/1072875p1.html

February 28, 2010 - SCEA is looking into widespread reports tonight of PlayStation Network login errors causing many left unable to play games, and even lose trophies, on certain PlayStation 3 consoles.

"We're aware that many of you are having problems connecting to PSN, and yes, we're looking into it," the company said in a statement. "Stay tuned for updates."

Forum members and e-mail tipsters are saying this problem is primarily affecting owners of the older model of the PlayStation 3, and is even causing users to lose trophies previously earned. Many titles, such as Heavy Rain, are also now unplayable due to connection issues with Sony's servers.

One theory points to an issue with the console's internal calendar, which is reportedly resetting pre-slim models to 12/31/1999.

It's unclear at the moment how widespread this issue is.

IGN has contacted SCEA for additional updates on what's causing these errors.

Update: SCEA has confirmed PS3 Slim models (120/250GB) are connecting normally.

i was able to get on and play MW2 earlier this afternoon, then in the evening i tried to get on again, but i kept getting the connection error. i gave on trying to connect so i tried the special ops but another message came up saying the trophies couldnt load and then quitted the game by itself. so i just turned the system off.

Why would a lack of PSN connection render Heavy Rain unplayable? It's single-player only.

Problems were all solved. Bravo to Sony for jumping on the issue and solving it within 24 hours of it happening. Now I don't have to stress about not being able to play Battlefield all night tonight

Actually, I don't think Sony fixed anything. As I understand it, it was simply a calendar issue and was resolved by the date changing to March 1. Apparently the affected consoles thought this year was a leap year and thus there was a discrepancy between the consoles' clocks and the PSN clock. Rolling over to March 1 corrected it.

ha, a free service fixed itself in a day.

i guess the xbox fan club cried victory a bit prematurely.

so was there any word on any trophy/data loss?

I thought I lost my trophies, but upon logging on PSN on my PC, my trophies were all there.

As long as you have your trophies synced with PSN, you're good to go. At least that's what I heard.

Think about that. If the problem solved itself, then the PSN thought 3/2/2010 was 3/1/2010. The problem had to be corrected.

No, the issue was not caused solely by the days not matching up. You can go set your PS3 clock to a different date and still play games. The issue was that the PSN saw a whole bunch of consoles set to a day that doesn't EXIST, which caused issues. Rolling over to March 1st fixed the issue because March 1st is an "expected" date. It really exists.

The Zune had a similar problem a couple years ago (Zune and phat PS3 share the same calendar chip) which caused a leap-year error to brick a bunch of Zunes.
