ever since i got my car a month ago the tacometer did not work. this wasnt a big issue because ive been driving stick for 2 years so i am good at guesstimating engine speed based on note and shifting based on feel and really dont need a tach to drive. long story short, fsm troubleshooting led me to the cluster being bad so i figured i might as well open it up and look to see if anything let the smoke out before i drop $175 on a "new" cluster. i took out the cluster and took it apart all the way down to the bottom board with the lcd assemblies on them, i discovered 9 or 10 pins for the tach lcd assembly had no solder on them. not that the joints had cracked off or something, they had literally not a drop of solder on them. i fired up the iron and soldered them down and put the other companion board back on to test in the car and lo and behold the tach display fired right up along with everything else! i made it run a self test and every segment lit up as it should. i slapped it all back together and fired it up and it works like factory new.

i dont know why all of those pins were unsoldered or if the cluster was the car's original or a replacement, or how likely this is to happen to others, but if youre starting to/have been having wonkey issues take the time to pop open the device because it may be something as simple as a broken or missing solder joint or that a 30 year old passive component finally had enough and popped. the couple hours it takes to investigate may make the difference between handfull of bills for a replacement assembly or pocket change for cheap resistors or capacitors or whatever.

i didnt take a before picture because i didnt think about it at the time but the pins on the left all the way up to the yellow residue is where the unsoldered pins were. that was the problem all along, no solder so no contact so no tach.

of course not all happy stories have happy endings. when i was putting it back together i decided to clean all of the plastic stuff with isopropyl alcohol and a microfiber rag to make it as clear as possible. not a big deal, until i used it on the plastic with the graphics printed on it... and it started wiping them off. ughhhhh. so there is your second protip of the day: dont use alcohol on silkscreened graphics! :nono:

Glad to hear you find the issue. The solder connection are often found to be issues inside the power supply for the digital dash as well.
