Ok guys, this is the pinnacle of audio formats. DTS-HD Master Audio is capable of delivering audio that is bit-for-bit identical to the studio master at super high variable bit rates (up to 24.5 Mbps on Blu-ray™ Discs). This bit stream is so fast and the transfer rate so high that it can deliver 7.1 audio channel, 96k/24-bit sound identical to the original studio master. DTS’ single-bit-stream codec design enables supremely efficient content programming and consumer playback.

PS3 Adding DTS-HD Master AudioThe game console is adding killer audio, as well as a fancy new storefront

We’ve been hearing about PlayStation 3 updates, and now there’s confirmation as to what that upgrade will offer.

According to the PlayStation.Blog, the 2.30 firmware update will offer gamers DTS-HD Master Audio output for Blu-ray. Now you will have killer sound to match the high-def picture.

DTS-HS Master Audio provides a bit-to-bit presentation of the original movie’s studio master soundtrack. The update is also supposed to include DTS-HD High Resolution Audio. Sweet!

DTS confirmed the story, in a press release :

“We are extremely pleased that Sony Computer Entertainment (SCE) is adding the full spectrum premium DTS-HD Master Audio codec into the PS3 so that more than 10 million owners of one of the best selling computer entertainment systems can have the best sounding, most efficient and flexible audio technology available system as well,” said Brian Towne, Senior Vice President and General Manager, Consumer Division at DTS. “DTS-HD Master Audio is fast becoming the must-have feature for high definition entertainment enthusiasts.”

If new audio features don’t whet your appetite, there’s also a new version of the PlayStation store in the upgrade. This will include a revamped look and other fun features. Check out this video showing off the revamped store below.

So I take it this wont work on a regular DTS supported surround system? I've never even heard of DTS-HD until now.

most of the DTS-HD enabled recievers are only available on high end models and are priced over $1000.

well, my assumption would be that if you have it, you can use it. if you dont have it, oh well, youre still getting bluray quality sound out of what you have now, youre just not getting the 110% they have out there.

I think what you guys may be missing, is with the advent of DTS-HD MA, the PS3, which was once the most capable player for the money, is now by far the most capable player for the money.

On the bright side, TV's are coming without those useless speakers now Now we have to get surround sound!

Be VERY thankful for that! They're not called blose for a reason. The only thing blose is good at is marketing because they've convinced so many people that they're the best. Save your money and get a system twice as nice; the Klipsch quintet that Best Buy puts on sale every once in a while. It's not the best out there, but it's leaps and bounds beyond anything blose offers.

Pioneer announces A/V receivers, DTS-HD Master Audio and Dolby TrueHD supportby Erik Hanson, posted Jan 6th 2008 at 4:16PM

Pioneer is expanding its CES lineup with four new audio-video receivers, one of which supports the new high-definition audio codecs found in Blu-ray and HD DVD. The VSX-518-K, VSX-818V-K, VSX-918V-K, and VSX-1018TXH-K A/V receivers all feature Multi-Channel Acoustic Calibration with an included microphone for tweaking acoustics in the room, three 1080p-capable component inputs, and Auto Level Control for equalizing volume between sources. The VSX-518-K, 818V, and 918V all feature P.H.A.T (Pioneer Hybrid Amplifier Technology) power sources and support for WMA9 Pro over 5.1 channels, with the 518 dropping support for XM and Sirius satellite, iPod, and HDMI inputs. The big news is the VSX-1018TXH-K, with its support for 130 watts over 7.1 channels using a Direct Energy power supply, HDMI upscaling to 1080p, six digital inputs, and support for the lossy Dolby Digital Plus and DTS-HD High Resolution, and lossless Dolby TrueHD and DTS-HD Master Audio codecs. The VSX-518-K is priced at $199, the VSX-818V-K at $249, the VSX-918V-K at $349, all releasing in April, and the VSX-1018TXH-K will come to market in June for $599.

I've got that same VSX-1018 (the 8 is for 2008, 7 for 2007 ect..) but an older model. You will be able to find them online for around 530-550 probably. In 2009, $400-450.

DTS-HD high-res and DTS-HD master-audio can both be down sampled and played on a normal DTS capable player because it will still be a DTS encoded disk.

Even if not many can use it YET, I think it's awesome they're including it. Just makes the system more age-resilient. If you have a Blu-Ray player that supports DTS-HD now, you won't need to replace it when DTS-HD becomes common or when you feel like upgrading. That's one of the big benefits as media devices of the PS3 and Xbox: they're totally upgradeable like this. When a new software standard comes out, it can be made to work with the system. Very nice for consumers, especially if it's a free update like this one is.
