That used to happen with my PSone all the time. Usually after I'd leave the memory card in it for a while.

my ps2 was messed up, like it would freeze on certain games, some wouldn't play and it woulnd't play dvd's at all, so i called Sony. and they fixed it for free, all i had to do was pay 10 bux for the shipping there, and now my ps2 is like brand new.

I bought the origional playstation when it came out, use it for 6-7 odd years, then bought PS2 when it came out. My little bro knocked the origional one on to the floor and broke it, luckily by that point playstations were like $2. I havent had any technical problems with sony products yet.

Yes, removing the card while the machine is on usually corrupts the file in use. I lost my 100% finished GTA3 save because of that. But everything else on the card was unaffected. I've gone through about 5 memory cards and no memory corruption problems at all....

The PSX was different...I lost a few cards for no reason on that one.

I thought the big PS2 problems were laser read failures

Laser read issues only occur if you use the PS2 to play a lot of DVD's. Sony advises not to use it to play DVD's. The system can't handle that much constant reading.

So that's why it didn't work for a couple months

Except for the little problem with the laser that fixed it self, no problems at all for me. Sony has treated me pretty well, except when it comes to CD players

I've had one of each gen of PS2. None of them had any problems at all. I watch tons of DVD's on them (I have an Apex DVD player...It only finds 2 DVD's out of all the ones I have...other ones it doesn't even think there's a disk there). My cousin dropped his off his dresser and it still works perfectly. The only console I've ever had any trouble with is the Game Cube. Lately, its been freezing up during Metroid Prime and Zelda: Windwaker. It's irritating. Consoles shouldn't freeze up.My Xbox doesn't give me any trouble. My Genesis and 32X work great. My NES is missing the door, but works fine (after a contact replacement). My Atari is picky which plug you put the transformer in.

The lesson here: your console will work as well as you treat it in most cases. Some individual units are bad, but I don't think any console is so poorly built as to repeatedly cause severe problems. Just be glad that game saves aren't dependent on the battery in the cartridge anymore. Some of my NES games are starting to lose saves after all these years (namely Zelda).

My Xbox gave me a fair amount of trouble with Morrowind, just because there was so much to load. It crashed a couple of times on me.

My NES/SNES both work beautifully, mainly because the NES is the rarer top-loading kind (It's a 3 month old AV Famicom, fresh out of the box).

Oh, and some consoles ARE that poorly built. The Bandai Playdia had serious issues along those lines, Wonderswan was fine though. I get lots of read errors on my barely used NEC PC-FX too.
